With rising prices and stagnant wages, truly free streaming options like Tubi and Pluto TV are a welcome surprise. While even basic paid services now include ads and a monthly fee, these free platforms only require you to watch commercials. Surprisingly, their selection of movies and shows is just as good and varied as those offered by more expensive services like HBO Max and Netflix. Plus, the amount of advertising isn’t much different – it’s a lot like the experience of watching afternoon movies on channels like TBS, TNT, or Comedy Central back in the day.
These films offer a great way to find scary movies – including both popular releases and hidden gems. The following selection features both, and they’ve all become available to stream for free recently.
10) The Babysitter (1995)

If you enjoyed ’90s thrillers like Fear, Poison Ivy, or The Crush (especially if you’re an Alicia Silverstone fan!), you’ll probably like The Babysitter too. It’s a good fit if those movies appealed to you.
The plot is straightforward: a couple hires a beautiful babysitter. The husband is attracted to her and suspicious, and her boyfriend, Jack, feels the same way. Things get even more complicated when Jack’s friend Mark, who’s a little unsettling and also interested in the babysitter, enters the mix, creating a recipe for trouble.

9) From Dusk till Dawn (& Both Sequels)

Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk till Dawn is a clever and exciting film from the 90s that successfully pulls off a surprising twist. It starts out appearing to be a typical crime movie in the vein of Quentin Tarantino, but around the halfway point, it dramatically transforms into a very action-packed and gory vampire film.
Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino share a strong creative connection, both rising to prominence during the independent film surge of the 1990s and significantly contributing to it. Their most famous project together is From Dusk Till Dawn, where Rodriguez directed and Tarantino acted and wrote. The sequel, From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money, and the prequel, From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman’s Daughter, are also available to stream without cost, but they aren’t as well-regarded as the original.

8) Event Horizon

Paul W.S. Anderson is a key director when it comes to bringing video games to the big screen. His 1995 film, Mortal Kombat, remains highly enjoyable even today. He’s also delivered fun adaptations with Monster Hunter and the original Resident Evil movie.
While his films are often low-budget and sensational, that approach has sometimes been a strength. Event Horizon is a particularly notable example. It’s a genuinely scary science fiction horror movie with a creative take on the concept of Hell. Although the final version released in theaters wasn’t exactly what the director envisioned – and some of its most intense scenes are gone forever – it remains a frightening film.

7) What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

I’ve always heard that What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? is famous not just for being a great movie, but for what was happening behind the scenes. Apparently, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford really didn’t like each other! They were rivals for years, always going after the same parts, and things got really tense on set during this film. It sounds like they were at each other’s throats the whole time!
However, Baby Jane is also celebrated for its surprisingly emotional depth. The actresses, playing a fading Hollywood star tormenting her disabled sister, were perfectly cast. The film powerfully conveys the genuine animosity between them, and combined with Lukas Heller’s excellent script, it remains one of the most gripping movies of the 1960s.

6) It Comes at Night

Often overlooked in the wave of A24 horror films from the 2010s, It Comes at Night is a remarkably disturbing exploration of paranoia and its ultimately pointless nature. The film isn’t focused on jump scares; instead, it expertly creates a sense of dread and profound isolation.
The actors deserve a lot of praise – Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott (who tried his best with Wolf Man), Carmen Ejogo, and Riley Keough all give fantastic performances. At just 91 minutes, the movie is a perfect length and really comes to life when you watch it in the dark.

5) Zombieland: Double Tap

The first Zombieland movie perfectly blended horror, comedy, and action. Plus, it featured one of the most memorable celebrity cameos ever – Bill Murray.
The original cast, including Bill Murray, reunited a decade later in Zombieland: Double Tap. Though not as strong as the first film, it was a successful comedy sequel, significantly better than other revivals from that time, like Zoolander 2 and Dumb and Dumber To. The movie’s success was largely due to the continued great chemistry of the main actors, as well as the fantastic addition of new cast members Zoey Deutch and Rosario Dawson.

4) Scream – Scream 3

If you’re a fan of scary movies, the 1996 classic Scream is currently available to stream for free! With the newest installment, Scream 7, now out to rent, it’s a perfect time to revisit the original. And once you’re done, you can keep the thrills going with Scream 2, which is also available to watch, followed by Scream 3 – it’s not the best, but still enjoyable!
As a film buff, I absolutely love Scream. It’s Wes Craven at his finest – seriously, that opening scene is iconic! What I think makes it so great is how cleverly it mixes scares with humor, and it’s packed with really memorable characters. For me, it’s easily one of the best films of the ’90s, period – not just within the horror genre.

3) Hollow Man

While Hollow Man marked the end of Paul Verhoeven’s career in American filmmaking – he didn’t enjoy it and eventually moved away from Hollywood – it remains a thoroughly entertaining movie.
The script isn’t great, and it unfortunately leans into some problematic, misogynistic themes. However, Kevin Bacon delivers a fantastic performance as the captivatingly creepy Sebastian Caine, the special effects hold up surprisingly well after over two decades, and even though the movie devolves into a typical slasher finale, it’s still a satisfying one.

2) Cabin Fever (& Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever)

Eli Roth burst onto the horror scene in 2002 with Cabin Fever, establishing himself as a director who could capture the feel of classic 70s and 80s horror films. The movie was reminiscent of George A. Romero’s The Crazies, and, fittingly, The Crazies received its own updated remake around ten years later.
Seven years after the release of Cabin Fever, a sequel titled Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever was made. Notably, this sequel was directed by Ti West, who later became known for the X franchise. While it doesn’t quite live up to the original film, and isn’t as strong as West’s other movies (The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers), it’s generally considered the best sequel in the Cabin Fever series, despite West’s later disassociation from it.

1) You’re Next

Before the movie Ready or Not, director Adam Wingard made You’re Next. Similar to both films, You’re Next features a woman who joins a family and then finds herself fighting for survival on a terrifying, violent night.
While both films share similarities, You’re Next feels more realistic than Ready or Not. It follows a family terrorized by masked attackers who systematically hunt them down. However, the film cleverly suggests that some family members might be involved in the horrifying scheme. It’s worth watching for its intense, claustrophobic atmosphere, Sharni Vinson’s strong performance, and a particularly memorable use of piano wire as a weapon.
