Tom Hanks is a huge star, known for films like Splash, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, and Toy Story. However, a movie he made in 1986 has largely been overlooked—until now. Fans can now stream this long-forgotten film for free.
Do you remember the movie Every Time We Say Goodbye? Don’t worry if you don’t, even if you’re a big Tom Hanks fan! It’s an early film from his career that’s largely been forgotten, despite his many famous roles. Released in 1986, the movie tells the story of David Bradford, an American pilot in Jerusalem during WWII, who falls in love with a Jewish woman named Sarah. It didn’t do well with audiences – it currently has a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – and hasn’t gained much attention since its release. Now, you can watch Every Time We Say Goodbye for free on Tubi, as it was added to their streaming service on April 1st.
Every Time We Say Goodbye Marked a Significant Shift for Tom Hanks

While perhaps not one of Tom Hanks’ most famous roles, his performance as David Bradford was a turning point in his career. After becoming known for comedies like Splash, Bachelor Party, and The Money Pit in the 1980s, Every Time We Say Goodbye was Hanks’ first truly dramatic film role. Unlike his typically energetic performances, this character required a more subtle and restrained approach, building tension through drama rather than humor. The film itself was a significant departure for Hanks, exploring serious topics like forbidden love, religious differences, and cultural challenges—a far cry from the lighthearted romantic comedies he was known for.
Despite being a departure for him, Every Time We Say Goodbye wasn’t successful for Tom Hanks. The film had a limited release and performed very poorly in theaters, earning only $278,623 worldwide – making it his lowest-grossing movie ever. Critics weren’t impressed either, with many believing Hanks wasn’t right for the role. Janet Maslin of The New York Times pointed out that Hanks’ natural comedic energy didn’t fit the film’s serious tone. While there were doubts about Hanks moving from comedy to drama, he eventually proved his dramatic range, achieving critical acclaim a few years later with his role in Philadelphia.
