Despite shutting down some internal studios like Bluepoint Games and Dark Outlaw Games, Sony Interactive Entertainment is still actively buying other companies. Their latest acquisition is Cinemersive Labs, a UK-based studio that will now be part of Sony’s Visual Computing Group.
The company is known for its strong skills in computer vision and machine learning, which it will use to make game graphics better. Specifically, they plan to improve how games are rendered and create more realistic visuals for players. Sony hasn’t revealed the purchase price or detailed exactly how this technology will be implemented.
It’s natural to question how current issues will impact Sony’s future PlayStation 6 console, which is currently expected around 2027, though supply chain problems could push that date back. Reports suggest the PS6 might include a portable gaming device and feature advanced upscaling technology like AMD FSR 5 and an improved version of PlayStation’s Spectral Super Resolution. The estimated manufacturing cost is around $760, and while Sony could sell it for $699 by taking a loss, the lack of strong competition from Xbox probably means they won’t need to.
It’s still unclear exactly how Cinemersive’s technology will work, but they’ve already demonstrated some remarkable capabilities. Their website features examples of photos transformed into 3D visuals using AI, and VR videos offering a full range of motion. You can find more details on their website.
