Get ready for more of The Apothecary Diaries! Season 3 is coming in October as part of the Fall 2026 anime season, bringing new obstacles for Maomao. Plus, a movie is scheduled to hit theaters in Japan this December, with details about international release dates coming later. The movie will feature a brand new story written by the series’ author, Natsu Hyuuga. While we wait, J-Novel Club has announced they’ll be releasing an English audiobook version of the original novel, confirmed at this year’s Anime Boston.
RB Media, an audiobook publisher, will be managing the project, with the first installment expected to arrive later this year. According to Anime News Network, a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet, so fans will need to wait a few months for more information. Natsu Hyuuga also attended Anime Boston this year, a large Japanese pop culture event held from April 3rd to 5th, featuring announcements, costumes, anime, manga, video games, and areas for artists and vendors.
What Happened In The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Finale?

Season two of the series covers volumes three and four of the original light novels, mainly centering around the Shi Clan’s plots and their ultimately unsuccessful revolt. Throughout the turmoil, the connection between Jinshi and Maomao deepens, with Jinshi becoming more expressive about his feelings and Maomao gaining a better understanding of him. The season finale marks a significant shift in the story, particularly for Jinshi, who discards his disguise as an eunuch and embraces his true role as the Moon Prince.
I’ve been watching the story unfold, and even though he doesn’t want to be emperor, he still has duties as the emperor’s brother and someone who used to be next in line for the throne. The recent uprising by the Shi Clan seems to have been a turning point for Jinshi, helping him finally embrace who he really is – Ka Zuigetsu. This is going to drastically alter the course of the story. I noticed that while the season finale brought the two main characters closer, they aren’t officially a couple just yet. Meanwhile, Loulan had a really rough time, barely managing to escape with her life and starting over in a different kingdom under a new name.
No one knows where she is, but she’s escaped the control of her family and is starting fresh. In Season 3, Maomao will be asked by Jinshi to investigate strange happenings in northern farming villages – something big is going on there. Despite being busy, they’ll travel there together. Even though Maomao no longer works in the palace, the birth of Concubine Gyokuyou’s son will cause significant changes within it.
