A change widely praised by fans of the Invincible series—even those who usually stick closely to the original comics—has been the reimagining of Mark Grayson’s mother, Debbie. She’s evolved from a traditional stay-at-home wife into a strong moral center for Mark and a key factor in Nolan’s transformation on Earth.
After giving up his plan for world domination starting in Season 2, Nolan has been trying to make amends for his actions. But his recent meeting with Debbie in the episode “Give Us a Moment” doesn’t go as it did in the original comic books. The show portrays Debbie as having gained more confidence and holding a lot of resentment towards Nolan.
The way he apologized to Debbie in this episode could drastically change things for both her and the show, taking their relationship in a completely new direction. Now, the big question is whether they’ll ultimately end up where the original comic book story goes.
Debbie Was a Pushover In the Comics
Comparing the apology scene from the Invincible comics to the one in “Give Us a Moment” isn’t fair – they’re completely different and don’t really measure up against each other.
Okay, so when Nolan finally showed up on Earth – around issue #71 of the comics – to get Mark ready for the Viltrumite War, things were…awkward. He actually apologized to Debbie for almost killing their son all those years ago, which you’d think would be a huge moment. But honestly, the whole reunion felt really flat. It just didn’t live up to the hype after waiting so long to see it happen. As a fan, I was a little disappointed!

The note was brief, barely filling a page. Nolan did most of the writing, while Debbie only had three short sentences, simply stating she’d always hate him and wouldn’t believe he’d changed. Surprisingly, despite everything – the deaths of thousands, the abuse of their son, and years of demeaning treatment – Debbie seemed more upset by the situation itself than by his actions.
It’s shocking that Debbie doesn’t react at all when Nolan plans to send Mark off to a dangerous, potentially fatal war in deep space. In the comics, she immediately goes along with it – they’re both launched into space just six pages later. It’s a truly unbelievable moment.
Viewers thought this made Debbie seem even more powerless, and that Nolan wasn’t held accountable enough for what he did. This was especially striking because, in the most recent episode of Invincible, Debbie completely tore into him with her words.

Sandra Oh delivered an outstanding performance in the episode “Give Us a Moment.” In a powerful five-minute scene, she listened to Nolan’s robotic apology before sharply criticizing it and ultimately releasing her built-up frustration by punching him, resulting in a broken hand.
Debbie is brutally honest with Nolan, telling him his actions are unforgivable and dismissing him as a poor imitation of a person before demanding he leave for good. Their breakup in the Invincible series felt much more definitive than it ever was in the original comic books.
Is There Still Hope for Nolan & Debbie?
After Nolan and Mark returned from a brief war, Nolan and Debbie reunited around issue #80 of the comic. They quickly told Mark they were getting back together and decided to move to Talescria – the central headquarters of the Coalition of Planets – to escape attention surrounding Nolan’s return to Earth.

Readers felt Debbie’s quick forgiveness of Nolan didn’t ring true, especially considering how suddenly her relationship with Paul ended before Mark recovered from his battle with Conquest. Things were made worse by the fact that Debbie largely disappeared from the story afterward, appearing only for brief, often humorous, scenes of her and Nolan being affectionate.
Given how hurtful Debbie’s last words were to Nolan before he went to war, it would be a huge betrayal of her character if she and Nolan quickly reconciled. However, the show seems to be building towards them getting back together anyway.
Nolan realized Mark was right – the apology seemed more about Mark needing to say it than about actually fixing things. It was Debbie who quietly showed she was willing to move forward, opening the door to let him inside. A little while later, she tested him by asking if she was still his “pet.” When he honestly replied, “You never were,” she looked surprised for a moment, but quickly returned to being angry.

The moment that strongly hinted Nolan and Debbie would reconcile came during Nolan’s flashback at the food dispenser. Debbie told him, “You give up too easily,” a statement that clearly mirrored Nolan’s efforts to win her back and earn her forgiveness.
It seems likely Nolan and Debbie will reconcile, but their path to getting back together will be much slower than in the original comics. Nolan will need to work hard to win her back, and Debbie will have a tough time believing he’s really changed, even if she can’t completely forgive his past actions.
