Marina Sirtis has revealed that reuniting with her fellow cast members from Star Trek: The Next Generation during the filming of Star Trek: Picard season 3 was surprisingly emotional. Sirtis returned as Counselor Deanna Troi for the final season of the Patrick Stewart series, and the experience of working with her original co-stars proved deeply moving.
Seasons 2 and 3 of Star Trek: Picard were filmed consecutively during the COVID-19 pandemic, which created a challenging environment for everyone involved. The cast and crew had to wear masks and maintain social distancing while on set. Marina Sirtis, who had moved back to the UK after her husband Michael Lamper passed away in 2019, returned to Los Angeles to film the series. However, she described the reunion with her Star Trek: The Next Generation co-stars as being a sad experience.
In a recent interview on The Show People Podcast with Andrew Keates, Marina Sirtis talked about the challenges of living in Los Angeles during the COVID-19 pandemic and her experience filming season three of Star Trek: Picard. Sirtis admitted to feeling isolated and hurt that some of her co-stars didn’t invite her to their homes. You can read her comments and see a clip of the interview on Instagram.
Andrew Keates wonders if the close, supportive feeling often described among the cast and crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation actually existed during the show’s original run.
I had to be honest with my Star Trek co-stars about how I was feeling, because I tend to dwell on things if I don’t. I actually told a few of them, not Michael or Jonathan, that they had hurt my feelings. I explained that they all had swimming pools and nice outdoor spaces, and I didn’t. I pointed out that after Michael’s passing and me being on my own, it would have been nice if they’d invited me over for a drink, where we could have socially distanced outside. They said they hadn’t even considered it, and that was exactly my point – they hadn’t thought about it at all.
Marina Sirtis clarified that her disagreements weren’t with Jonathan Frakes or Michael Dorn, but with a few other cast members – specifically Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, and LeVar Burton. Like everyone else, they were navigating a frightening and uncertain period during the COVID-19 lockdown, and understandably limited visitors due to concerns about the virus.
After moving back to Los Angeles to film season 3 of Star Trek: Picard, Marina Sirtis had hoped to reconnect with the close, supportive relationships she’d shared with her Star Trek: The Next Generation castmates since 1987. Unfortunately, she found things had changed and was deeply disappointed.
Fans and critics both loved the third season of Star Trek: Picard, and the original cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation often talked about how much they enjoyed reuniting for what they thought would be a final time. That’s why it’s surprising to learn there were issues behind the scenes, particularly for Marina Sirtis. She’s also stated that a planned spinoff series, Star Trek: Legacy, is unlikely to ever be made.
While the third season of Star Trek: Picard beautifully reunited the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, recent comments from Marina Sirtis about difficult on-set experiences unfortunately cast a shadow over that positive reunion. Despite this, it remains the strongest season of Star Trek: Picard, though it’s disheartening to learn that the filming process wasn’t entirely pleasant for Sirtis.
