Dungeons & Dragons is letting players test out new character options with their latest ‘Unearthed Arcana’ playtest. This one focuses on playing villains, giving players the chance to create cunning and devious characters. Designed for the upcoming edition of the game (previously referred to as the 2024 rules), this playtest introduces completely new character archetypes and paths, letting you embrace darker roles in your adventures. It doesn’t revisit old character classes or abilities – everything here is fresh and offers unique character creation possibilities.
The recently released Unearthed Arcana (UA) for Dungeons & Dragons has been a fantastic addition to the character creation options introduced in the latest edition. Because this edition is essentially a fresh start for the game’s rules, these new subclasses, feats, and character systems give players more ways to create unique and detailed heroes for campaigns using the updated mechanics. Considering the announced plans for 2026, which begin with a horror-themed season, the dark and villainous style of this UA perfectly aligns with the game’s future direction.
D&D’s Newest Unearthed Arcana Introduces Four New Subclasses With A Villain Theme

The Villainous UA introduces four new subclasses for players to try, including:
- Pestilence Domain Cleric
- Circle of the Titan Druid
- Hell Knight Fighter
- Demonic Sorcerer
Pestilence Clerics draw upon the power of disease, poison, famine, and decay, weakening their enemies with terrible plagues. They quickly become resistant to Necrotic and Poison damage, and their spells of these types bypass enemy resistances. This subclass’s magic perfectly matches its theme, granting access to spells like Ray of Sickness, Stinking Cloud, Blight, and Contagion as they level up. Uniquely, Pestilence Clerics can directly inflict the Exhaustion condition on their targets, a rare ability that most characters don’t possess.
This Cleric’s terrifying powers in D&D not only inflict great harm, but can also cause deadly infections and even transform them into swarms of vermin to spread disease. The Hell Knight Fighter is another dangerous character who spreads infection through the festering wounds they create using the power of the Nine Hells. This Fighter relies on fire damage and dark pacts with devils to enhance their weapons and gear. Ultimately, the Hell Knight Fighter can even send the souls of those they kill directly to Hell for eternal punishment.
The Circle of the Titan Druid gains the incredible ability to transform into a gigantic, monster-like creature – a Kaiju – harnessing the power of nature to counter the spread of civilization with immense destruction. They can become a colossal Behemoth, Leviathan, or Insectoid, and these forms become even more powerful as the Druid gains experience, eventually growing into enormous beasts capable of overwhelming and consuming their foes.
Sorcerers connected to the Demon ancestry gain their magical abilities from The Abyss, a realm of immense power and home to terrifying creatures like Demogorgon, Orcus, and Lolth. This connection grants them chaotic magic, mirroring the evil nature of demons. Whenever these Sorcerers use their natural magical abilities, a random, dangerous effect can manifest around them – things like clinging spiderwebs, harmful goo, captivating spores, poisonous plants, or even ghostly bones that drain life. As their power grows, these Sorcerers can even summon demons, unleashing further destruction.
This UA Also Includes Two Paths Of Villainy With Multiple Feats To Become A Death Knight Or Lich

These new character options offer dramatically darker storylines than typical classes like Sorcerers, Clerics, Druids, or Fighters. While classes like the Hexblade Warlock and Oathbreaker Paladin explore morally gray areas, these playtest options – the Death Knight and Lich Paths – allow players to fully embrace villainy by transforming their characters into iconic undead creatures. These Paths are implemented through a series of Feats players unlock as they level up, letting them become either a Death Knight or a Lich – two of the most well-known villains in D&D history.
Becoming a Death Knight starts at level 4 with a special ability (a Feat) that boosts either your Charisma or Strength and introduces Death Points – a new resource for your character. You can use Death Points to unlock more powerful abilities from this path, starting immediately with a skill called Death Strike. As you gain levels, you’ll choose from three different options, each offering unique advantages. Reaching level 12 allows you to fully become a Death Knight, transforming into Undead and gaining even more terrifying powers.
The Path of the Lich functions similarly to other paths, offering a special ability at Level 4 that increases Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma. Instead of tracking Death Points, you collect enemy souls in a Spirit Jar, which represents your life force and must be defended. Reaching Level 12 allows you to become a Lich, choosing additional abilities along the way to create a unique version of this classic villain. Once you become a Lich, you’re incredibly difficult to kill, effectively conquering death as an Undead being.
Evil Options For Character Creation Has The Potential To Craft Fascinating Builds

The different Paths offer a lot of customization, particularly for characters like Liches or Death Knights who can pick from three unique Feats in addition to their starting ones. For instance, the Lich Path includes a Feat called Transfer Life, but you need the Initiate Feat first. Choosing Transfer Life boosts your character’s Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma, and also unlocks the Soul Transference ability. This lets your Soul Jar gain a special trait, giving a teammate temporary hit points whenever you absorb a soul.
The villainous subclasses presented are quite unique, offering either dramatic, over-the-top abilities or subtly menacing skills that add depth to any character. These paths are versatile enough to work with various character types – for example, a cleric focused on death could become a lich, or a fallen paladin could embrace the role of a death knight. Packed with opportunities for both storytelling and exciting battles, these paths and subclasses might be the most compelling that Wizards of the Coast has created to date.
These new character options are still being tested, so they could be adjusted before appearing in official Dungeons & Dragons books or expansions. However, with a horror-themed season coming to the game soon, this unofficial content might become official much quicker than expected.
