Despite some fan disappointment with the final season of Stranger Things, Netflix is moving forward with a new animated series called Stranger Things: Tales from ’85. This spin-off could revitalize interest in the story and the town of Hawkins, but it also carries the risk of damaging the reputation of the original series, which was once highly praised for its nostalgic and exciting atmosphere.
Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 takes place between seasons 2 and 3, offering a fresh look at the characters and storylines from the show’s second season. However, the relatively quiet reaction online suggests that interest in the Stranger Things universe may be waning as we approach the final season.
What Can Fans Expect From ‘Stranger Things: Tales From ’85’?
The trailer for Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 showed us some new faces, like a character named Nikki, and introduced completely new monsters. This spin-off series has a big job: it needs to introduce new storylines and wrap up existing ones in just 10 episodes, all before the events of season three begin. Given the mixed reaction to the final season of Stranger Things, many dedicated fans aren’t thrilled about Tales from ’85, especially because it’s switching from live-action to animation. While the animation change might be helpful since the original actors are now older, it suggests the story wasn’t considered strong enough to justify a full live-action production.
Because Dark Horse Comics has already covered similar ground in its comics, some parts of Tales from ’85 feel repetitive. For example, the 2018 comic The Other Side delved into Will Byers’ experiences in the Upside Down during the first season of Stranger Things. Other comics have also explored different viewpoints and time periods within the show’s history, like The Rise of Hellfire, Six, Into the Fire, Science Camp, and Tales From Hawkins. Even Stranger Things: Zombie Boys went back in time to show the early friendship between Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and Will before the supernatural events began in Hawkins, Indiana.
During promotion for Season 5, the creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, suggested a live-action spin-off could happen, taking place in a different time and location. They mentioned that while some familiar faces might appear, the spin-off would also explore the show’s deeper, previously hinted-at backstory. Season 5 may have only scratched the surface of this lore, leaving plenty of story possibilities beyond the villain, Vecna. While fans might be excited about a spin-off that builds on the events of the final season, an animated series set earlier in the timeline probably won’t delve into the more complex supernatural elements.
Do Fans Want a ‘Stranger Things’ Spin-Off?

As a huge fan of live-action shows, especially Stranger Things, I think this animated spin-off faces a real uphill battle. The original series thrived on building suspense and introducing high-stakes storylines each season, and we all raced to see what happened next. But knowing the characters’ ultimate fates already feels like a major hurdle. It’s tough to get truly invested when the big surprises are gone. Honestly, I’m worried Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 won’t deliver the same level of thrills and suspense we’ve come to expect, simply because the stakes feel much lower this time around.
It’s likely the creators of Stranger Things will eventually try to bring the show back with another season and the original cast. Because we’ve watched the actors grow up on screen, a reunion would probably create a lot of excitement. However, revisiting the story with a time jump feels uninspired, particularly so soon after a finale that many fans found disappointing.
While an animated Stranger Things spin-off has its drawbacks, it also offers some exciting possibilities. Animation will allow the show’s creators to explore more imaginative and visually striking scenes, as suggested by the trailer’s distinct style. Given the show’s constant nods to 1980s pop culture, an animated spin-off feels like a natural fit – many popular franchises from that decade, like The Real Ghostbusters, Star Wars: Droids, and Alf: The Animated Series, also received animated adaptations.
The new animated series, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, faces the challenge of satisfying existing fans after the main show’s ending, while also attracting new viewers. Because it’s a spin-off, it might be harder to gain a new audience. Replicating the strong emotional connection viewers had with characters like Eleven and Mike in an animated format could also be tricky. Still, there’s a possibility the show will be a surprising success and capture the same magic as the original. Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 will premiere on Netflix on April 23, 2026.
