The new Disney+ series, Maul – Shadow Lord, explores what happened to Darth Maul after the fall of the Republic – a question Star Wars fans have long pondered. The show begins about a year after the events of The Clone Wars, leaving viewers curious about its place within the overall Star Wars timeline.
When Maul – Shadow Lord Takes Place on Star Wars Timeline
Disney+ has officially added Maul – Shadow Lord to its Star Wars Timeline, making its placement in the Star Wars section of the streaming platform official. Viewers should watch it between The Bad Batch and Solo: A Star Wars Story for the correct chronological order.

This is a noteworthy placement because Solo is another significant Star Wars project featuring Maul during the period when the Empire ruled. Considering Shadow Lord comes right before it on the official timeline, Maul now appears in two consecutive entries covering that era. This is the first time the character has held back-to-back positions on the official Disney+ timeline.

As a Star Wars fan, I’ve been following how they’re organizing everything into different time periods, and the new comic, Maul: Shadow Lord, fits right into the ‘Reign of the Empire’ era. That’s the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, which is a really interesting period. It’s the fourth story released in that era so far, and there are 13 total projects set during that time, so I’m excited to see how it all connects!
To watch the Star Wars ‘Reign of the Empire’ stories in order, here’s the recommended viewing sequence: Tales of the Underworld, Tales of the Empire, The Bad Batch, Maul: Shadow Lord, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Star Wars Rebels, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Set on the city planet of Janix, Shadow Lord tells the story of Maul as he attempts to rebuild his criminal organization during the beginning of the Empire’s reign, operating independently of the Emperor. The series, created by Dave Filoni, continues the storyline from the end of The Clone Wars Season 7, picking up after Maul escaped from Ahsoka Tano during the events of Order 66.
How Important is Maul – Shadow Lord’s Timeline Placement?

It’s always been unclear how Maul went from leaving The Clone Wars to appearing as the leader of a criminal organization in Solo. The new series, Shadow Lord, will explore that missing piece of his story, showing how he regained his power and built the Crimson Dawn syndicate while the Empire was rising.
The series Solo takes place about ten years before A New Hope, meaning it’s at least six or seven years after the events of Shadow Lord. This timeline allows the show to depict Darth Maul as he’s first building his criminal empire, before he becomes the powerful and cunning crime lord we see in the Solo movie.
Following his appearance in Solo, Darth Maul returns in Star Wars Rebels, but his connection to the Crimson Dawn organization is completely ignored. Instead, the story focuses on his relentless pursuit of Obi-Wan Kenobi. With the release of Shadow Lord, fans can now experience Maul’s complete story in chronological order: his escape during the execution of Order 66, his rise to power on the planet Janix, his brief appearance leading Crimson Dawn in Solo, and ultimately, his final confrontation and death at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine, as seen in Rebels.
