I don’t usually get excited about game updates, but Crimson Desert is different. The recent major update really improved the game with features like five permanent mounts, Refinement Tokens, a faster crafting and cooking system, and a tool that automatically collects ores. It’s made the overall experience much better.
Patch 1.02.00 is now available, and while it doesn’t have quite as many updates and new features as the previous patch, it still includes a lot of important changes. Let’s take a look at what’s new and how it will improve your gameplay, starting with the most significant addition…
More Storage Chest Slots
Players and critics had been asking for a storage chest for a while, and the developers delivered quickly. They even thoughtfully placed it inside Kliff’s tent to avoid blocking access, but it soon became clear that the 240 available slots weren’t nearly enough space.
Great news! The developer has significantly increased the Storage Chest capacity – it’s now almost four times larger! You’ll have space for up to 1000 items, perfect for storing all your armor, weapons, ingredients, trade goods, ores, and anything else you collect – even those items you keep meaning to sell.
There’s a small catch: these extra slots are linked to upgrading your Howling Hill Camp. You’ll begin with 240 slots, and each camp expansion will add another 100, ultimately giving you 360 more slots with the final upgrade. This encourages players to expand their camp and is a nice reward for those who’ve already focused on camp space.
Basic and Classic Controls
I really appreciated being able to hold the sprint button instead of mashing it – it felt so much smoother! But it did cause a problem with how stamina worked. Before, you’d tap to sprint, get a quick boost, and then your stamina would recover. Now, holding the button just drained your stamina bar completely. Honestly, some people actually preferred tapping because it gave you more control over when you sprinted and how much stamina you used.
This update introduces two movement options: Basic and Classic. Basic movement lets you hold down the sprint button, while Classic requires you to tap it repeatedly. The biggest improvement comes when riding mounts: with Basic controls, stamina now drains at regular intervals when you hold sprint, instead of all at once. If you prefer more precise control, Classic drains stamina each time you press the sprint button. It’s a significant change and offers more player choice.
There have also been several small quality-of-life improvements to movement. You can now fast travel from Abyss Nexus plates even while moving a little bit, though it doesn’t work while riding a mount or gliding yet. The developers are planning to add support for fast traveling on some mounts in the future.
But honestly, the biggest improvement for me is the new gliding mechanic. Now, instead of awkwardly tapping and holding the jump button repeatedly, you just hold it down to glide. It’s so much smoother and eliminates the frustration of trying to glide after a complex jump – I’m really glad they changed it.
Headgear Visibility

Looking good is a big part of the game, especially with so much to do. While we still can’t change how armor looks without changing its stats – a ‘transmog’ system would fix that – we’ve made progress! Now, you can actually see headgear clearly, which is a welcome improvement.
I really enjoy the Blackwing Mask, but constantly making crow noises while talking to people (and them not responding!) made me wish I could hide it, just to remember what Kliff’s face looked like. Thankfully, the game now lets you choose when the mask is visible. You can have it always on, hidden during story scenes, only appear in battles, or stay hidden at all times.
The developer has more updates planned, including a way to hide weapons carried on your character’s back. This should prevent those funny-looking moments when running around with large weapons like the Banner Pike.
More Graphical Improvements and Features
Okay, so the latest updates are awesome! I’ve noticed a big improvement in how FSR looks – both the upscaling and the frame generation tech are way smoother now. And for those of us using DLSS Ray Reconstruction, it’s great news that it doesn’t hog as much GPU memory anymore. They even fixed some weird visual bugs, like how leaves and trees looked with ray tracing and these reconstruction technologies, and the whole game feels less choppy overall. Seriously, it’s a much better experience now!
Xbox Series X users can now turn on 4K upscaling while playing in Performance Mode. PlayStation 5 Pro owners playing in Quality Mode will benefit from enhanced image sharpening and anti-aliasing. Both consoles have also received various other updates to improve stability and performance, including a fix for an Xbox issue where V-Sync would unexpectedly change when pressing the Home button.
Even More Little Touches

We’ve also fixed a bunch of smaller issues. The Double Boost horse ability now works as intended, and bosses won’t randomly teleport away during fights. We’ve made jumping feel more immediate after attacking, and fixed a strange bug where checking details about Abyss nodes on the map could accidentally reset puzzles – thankfully, I never ran into that one myself!
There are also some exciting new additions, including a stylish new armor set and helmet specifically for cats – a great feature for players who love customizing their feline characters! Pailune now has its own Abyss Nexus, so you no longer need to choose between the north and south Abyss Cressets. It does need to be activated, but it’s hard to miss. The user interface has also been improved – shops now show the most important items first, and your minimap scale won’t reset while riding a mount at top speed.
As a player, I really appreciate how they’ve separated the ‘Save’ and ‘Load’ options – it’s so easy to accidentally hit the wrong one when you’re trying to get the perfect result, like with Abyss Gear or investments! And they’ve added labels for your save slots, which is a huge help. When you’re loading a game, it’s now super clear whether it’s an auto-save or one you made yourself. It seems small, but it makes a big difference and I’m definitely glad they included it.
There are still a few things that aren’t clear – I’m not sure exactly what changes will be made to some of the unique monsters. Hopefully, we’ll get more details soon. I also dislike that using Aerial Roll now interrupts Flight Focus, especially since Unleash no longer provides the speed boost I liked. Finally, I’m curious to see how they’ll handle the dragon mount timers. Being able to dismiss Blackstar immediately, instead of waiting for the timer to run out, would be a significant improvement.
I’m really impressed with how quickly the Crimson Desert team is working to make the game even better! It’s awesome to see them so dedicated, especially since over four million copies have already been sold – that’s a lot of players counting on them! It’s only been a little over two weeks since launch, and they’ve been putting in crazy hours fixing bugs and listening to what we, the players, want. They even went back and changed the sprinting after some of us weren’t happy with it – that’s dedication! It really shows they care about making Crimson Desert the best it can be.
This method demonstrates a willingness to listen to both fans and critics of the game. It’s exciting to think about future updates, but even as it stands, the game offers a fantastic experience.
Just so you know, everything I’m about to say is my own opinion as a gamer. It doesn’t necessarily reflect what GamingBolt thinks as a site, and they shouldn’t be held responsible for my views!
