Anime games are plentiful, but they have a tricky job. They need to please existing fans while also offering solid, enjoyable gameplay. Some games do this by faithfully recreating beloved scenes, while others create new stories based on the anime. The best ones find a sweet spot between staying true to the source material and offering something fresh. It’s a tough line to walk, and many anime games don’t quite get it right.
As a big fan of Sword Art Online, I’ve always felt the video games haven’t quite captured the magic of the anime. Most games either retell Kirito’s story or let you create a character in a different setting. But Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online seems to be different – it’s trying to blend the familiar story with the freedom to create your own adventure, which is exactly what I’ve been hoping for. Instead of just repeating what we already know, this game promises more player control and could be a real step forward for the series.
A New Take on Aincrad

Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online returns to the memorable Aincrad storyline, but offers a new take on it. While Aincrad has been featured before, this version emphasizes player freedom and choice over a rigidly defined plot. The core idea of being stuck in a virtual world where your actions have real consequences is what always made Aincrad compelling, and this installment distinguishes itself by letting you play as a custom character instead of focusing on Kirito.
Other attempts to bring this world to life have focused on pre-planned storylines. This new game aims for a more flexible experience, letting players influence what happens. I’ve always been fascinated by the world of Sword Art Online and wanted to explore Aincrad myself, and Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online seems to be doing that in a really exciting way.
The game focuses on exploring the world, fighting enemies, and making smart choices. These features are key to creating a truly interactive experience of Aincrad, rather than one that feels scripted. It starts at the very beginning of the anime’s story, but lets you play as a custom character with AI companions, aiming to recreate the feel of a virtual reality massively multiplayer online game. If Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online succeeds in this, it could be the immersive experience fans have been hoping for, and potentially the best Sword Art Online game ever made.
The Problem With Past Sword Art Online Games

Previous Sword Art Online games haven’t always gotten it right. While many let you create a character, the story usually focuses on Kirito, which can make it feel like you’re not really part of the main adventure. Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet added more ways to customize your character and introduced new gameplay, but it still heavily features established characters. Kirito remains the main focus, and players often end up feeling like they’re helping him rather than forging their own path.
Games like Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization often only let you play as Kirito, and even with new stories, they feel repetitive. I’m a big fan of the anime, but I’ve always wished I could experience the world and create my own story with a custom character. I want to influence the plot with my own choices and personality, but most Sword Art Online games don’t allow for that kind of freedom.
This method makes it harder to feel truly involved in the game. The core idea of Sword Art Online is that everyone has their own unique experiences within the same world, and even though Kirito is the main character, the anime does a good job of making other characters matter. This game, however, focuses too much on just one character, and misses out on that potential. Players want to feel like they are in the world, not just watching someone else’s story unfold. That’s why I’m so excited about Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online.
Echoes of Aincrad Will Finally Let Players Tell Their Own Story

One of the best things about Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online is that it lets you create and control your own character. This feels truer to the original Sword Art Online concept and will likely make the game more immersive and personal. Being able to define your own adventure is a big improvement – you’re not just following a set storyline, but making choices that actually change how the story goes.
I’ve been really impressed with the character creation tools in Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online. It feels like you truly get to build a character that’s your own, something a lot of other games haven’t quite nailed. We haven’t seen everything it can do yet, and it’s still unclear how much our choices will impact the story, but what I’ve seen so far looks great. Just being able to create a custom character is a huge step forward, in my opinion.
I’ve always dreamed of a Sword Art Online game that lets you fully immerse yourself in that world – not just playing alongside Kirito, but as your own unique character with a personal story. If Echoes of Aincrad can pull this off, it could inspire other anime games to do the same, letting fans create their own adventures in the worlds they love.
