This summer, Steven Spielberg is back with a new science fiction film called Disclosure Day, his latest take on first contact with aliens. While Disclosure Day seems like a completely new story, many sci-fi fans have noticed strong similarities to Spielberg’s classic film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Both films center around unexplained UFOs and alien events, sparking rumors that they might be connected. Recent comments from Emily Blunt, who stars in Disclosure Day, are only fueling speculation that it could be a sequel.
Emily Blunt discussed the connections between her new film, Disclosure Day, and Close Encounters in an interview with Empire. She explained that Disclosure Day provides answers to questions raised by Close Encounters. Blunt also described her character, Margaret Fairchild, as someone who always feels out of place and restless, like she doesn’t quite fit in.
Disclosure Day Isn’t an Actual Direct Sequel to Close Encounters

Fans who believe the movie Disclosure Day is a hidden sequel to Close Encounters might find some comments from the filmmakers interesting, but it’s important not to overthink them. The connections aren’t about specific plot points from Close Encounters; rather, Disclosure Day explores similar overarching ideas. While both films were directed by Spielberg and share common themes, they tell their stories in distinct ways. Close Encounters centered on the personal experience of one man, Roy Neary, while Disclosure Day takes a much broader approach, showing the story from multiple viewpoints. Disclosure Day‘s larger scope allows it to explore aspects of alien contact and discovery that Close Encounters couldn’t.
Like many filmmakers, Steven Spielberg often explores similar ideas throughout his work – for example, Christopher Nolan frequently focuses on fathers and time. Spielberg has long been captivated by the possibility of alien life and making contact with it, which initially inspired him to create Close Encounters. Now, after years of growth as a director and storyteller, he’s revisiting this theme with a new perspective. While the original film raised questions he didn’t have answers to at the time, he’s now developed fresh insights and feels ready to share them.
While Close Encounters hints at a conspiracy – the military deliberately misleads the public about events at Devil’s Tower – it primarily focuses on Roy Neary’s personal journey for understanding. Disclosure Day, however, dives headfirst into conspiracies and cover-ups. The film centers on Daniel Kellner, a character who tries to reveal the truth about aliens to the world. He’s opposed by Wardex, a powerful agency led by Noah Scanlon, who are determined to keep the existence of aliens a secret. Because of this focus, Disclosure Day can explore questions Close Encounters didn’t, like how long the government has known about aliens, their plans for them, and whether the public deserves to know the truth.
As a critic, I’m really intrigued by the upcoming home release of Disclosure Day. While not a direct sequel or connected by plot, pairing it with Close Encounters of the Third Kind feels like a brilliant double feature idea. Seeing these two films together offers a fascinating look at Spielberg’s evolution as a filmmaker. Close Encounters captures that youthful wonder of first contact, that pure awe of the unknown. But Disclosure Day seems to carry a different weight – a touch of the anxiety and paranoia that crept into his work after 9/11, similar to what we saw in films like Minority Report and War of the Worlds. It’s going to be incredibly interesting to observe how his perspective on alien encounters has shifted over the years, and these two films together will provide a really compelling contrast.
