Witch Hat Atelier Exec Explains the Anime’s Many Changes From the Manga

The anime adaptation of Kamome Shirahama’s Witch Hat Atelier recently premiered and is already being hailed as a highlight of the Spring 2026 anime season. The producer has discussed the changes made from the original manga in the first episode. As the Spring 2026 season gets underway, fans are excited to see several long-awaited manga adaptations, including Witch Hat Atelier.

The anime Witch Hat Atelier has launched with its first two episodes, and viewers are already enjoying it. However, some fans have pointed out differences between the anime and the original manga. Hiroaki Kojima, a producer at the animation studio Bug Films, explained on social media that these changes were made to fit the time limitations of a TV series. He stated that, “In TV anime, we unfortunately have to cut scenes sometimes due to time constraints.”

Kojima commented that he was impressed with the detailed comparisons people were making between the original source material and the anime. He explained that anime adaptations for television often require cuts due to time limitations, and revealed the first episode actually had a longer initial version. He mentioned that several animated scenes were ultimately removed during editing, and he’s considered releasing a director’s cut with those scenes included at some point in the future.

Fans noticed some changes in the first episode of Witch Hat Atelier, and it turns out they were made because the episode was too long. Several animated scenes were actually cut during editing. Many viewers would love to see an extended version of the series with those scenes included. Director Ayumu Watanabe previously mentioned that adapting the story into anime presented challenges like this.

What’s Different About Witch Hat Atelier’s Anime?

As Watanabe explained before the Witch Hat Atelier anime premiered, the biggest challenge was the time limit of the TV format. Adapting the story meant they couldn’t always include everything from the original work, but instead focused on expanding certain aspects. This often involved adding more detail to characters and showing, rather than telling, parts of the story.

It’s tough to remove content from the episodes, but Witch Hat Atelier smartly uses the anime format to delve into story elements that weren’t fully explored in the original manga. If the show continues to strike this balance, it has the potential to become a major success. You can currently watch Witch Hat Atelier on Crunchyroll.
