The Marvel Cinematic Universe is packed with characters from Marvel Comics, but some notable figures are missing. Bringing Spider-Man into the MCU has been complicated by a continuing agreement with Sony Pictures, which shares the rights to the character. While Spider-Man himself appears in the MCU, other characters connected to his stories haven’t had the same opportunity.
Norman Osborn, also known as The Green Goblin, has always been Spider-Man’s main enemy. Willem Dafoe famously played the character in the 2002 Spider-Man movie and was so well-received that he returned nearly two decades later for Spider-Man: No Way Home in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, a new actor will be taking on the role of The Green Goblin, according to a veteran Marvel producer.
The animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man presents a different take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this version, Peter Parker (voiced by Hudson Thames) becomes Spider-Man and is guided by Norman Osborn (Colman Domingo) instead of Tony Stark. The first season was captivating because of the developing relationship between Peter and Norman, which brought fresh layers to the Norman Osborn character. However, it also subtly reminded viewers that Norman always has a dangerous side, no matter the universe.
At the end of Season 1 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Norman Osborn appeared to be on the side of good, but it was clear he was still hiding secrets. His risky experiments opened a pathway for a symbiote to arrive, and a time-traveling Doctor Strange revealed that Norman’s work – specifically, testing spiders with Peter Parker’s blood – was actually what gave Peter his powers. Now, as Season 2 starts, Norman has both mutated spiders and a sample of the symbiote, along with all of his other projects and weapons. This combination creates a Green Goblin who is potentially even more dangerous than previous versions.
Marvel Producer Confirms A New MCU Green Goblin

Brad Winderbaum, an executive producer at Marvel Studios, recently discussed the Disney+ show Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on The Escape Pod podcast. He confirmed that the Green Goblin will appear in the series, though not immediately. Winderbaum emphasized that a key appeal of the show is seeing how beloved characters are living different lives and the potential for unexpected storylines.
One of the great things about Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is that, unlike the movies, we have the space to develop friendships and character storylines slowly over time—much like the comics do. For example, Lonnie Lincoln won’t immediately become Tombstone, and Norman Osborn won’t instantly turn into the Green Goblin (though he will eventually!). This allows viewers to really get to know the characters and their relationships, making the big turning points feel much more meaningful and emotionally impactful when they finally happen.
So there it is: Colman Domingo’s Norman Osborn will get his Green Goblin moment… eventually.

As a long-time Spider-Man fan, especially of those early Green Goblin comics, I was really excited to hear about this approach. Back then, the mystery surrounding who the Green Goblin was felt genuinely drawn out, and when it turned out to be Norman Osborn – Peter Parker’s best friend’s dad! – it was a huge deal. That storyline, and especially Gwen Stacy’s tragic fate, is why it’s considered one of the greatest hero-villain arcs in Marvel history. So, if this new Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man series is actually taking the time to carefully build up an alternate version of Peter’s story, we’re going to need to be patient before we see the Green Goblin show up. It sounds like it’ll be worth the wait if they do it right!
The second season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is expected to arrive on Disney+ around late 2026. Join the discussion about the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the ComicBook Forum!
