It’s hard for action thrillers to stay consistently exciting, but Prime Video has had success with the genre. Before the popular series Reacher became a hit, Bosch—a seven-season procedural—was already a successful show for the streaming service.
Similar to Reacher, the series Bosch was adapted from a popular book series, this one written by Michael Connelly. Bosch centered around Titus Welliver as a homicide detective working for the LAPD, solving murder cases in the Hollywood Hills. The show’s success led to a sequel, a prequel, and a well-received spin-off called Ballard.
Bosch’s Spinoff Ballard Is A Rare Perfect Spinoff
The new show, Ballard, stars Maggie Q as Detective Renee Ballard and builds on the successful formula of Bosch while still feeling new and unique. Unlike Bosch, which focused on current homicide cases, Ballard centers around the LAPD’s unit that investigates older, unsolved crimes.
Each episode of Ballard featured a new, self-contained mystery, but as Ballard investigated old, unsolved cases, he also began to reveal a pattern of corruption within the police department that had been hidden for years. Bosch was a successful police show because of its season-long stories, and Ballard combined that approach with the more traditional ‘case-of-the-week’ format.
Though Ballard and Welliver’s character shared some traits, Ballard was more understanding and less prone to outbursts. She wasn’t just a copy of the original character; she was a strong and captivating lead in her own right, adding to the excitement of the fast-moving series.
Ballard’s Spinoff Success Makes Bosch: Start of Watch Even More Exciting
One of the most remarkable aspects of Ballard’s first season was its excellent pacing. Many action thrillers deliver their biggest moments early on, causing the story to lose momentum later. Ballard skillfully avoided this by revealing twists and important story details at just the right moments, keeping viewers engaged throughout.
The positive reception to the Ballard series is a good sign for the upcoming Bosch prequel, Bosch: Start of Watch. It suggests that even though viewers already know how Harry Bosch’s career eventually unfolds, the show will still be able to make his early days as a detective interesting and engaging, focusing on a younger and less experienced version of the character.
The second season of Ballard has a lot of promise, offering a chance to delve deeper into the life of its main character. The first season was a great mix of fast-paced action, surprising twists, and well-developed characters, and fans will be eager to see how this Bosch spin-off builds on that success in its next installment.
