Before creating the popular show Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan gained recognition for a truly outstanding crime thriller. Now, that film is leaving the streaming service where you can currently watch it, so fans don’t have much time left to enjoy it.
As reported by Movie Web, the critically acclaimed film Sicario will be removed from Netflix on April 30th. After that date, it won’t be available to stream on the platform, and it’s currently unknown where, if anywhere, it will be available in May. It’s joining its sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, as a movie accessible only through paid video-on-demand services.
Sicario Is One of Taylor Sheridan’s Most Underrated Projects
Taylor Sheridan is currently famous for creating shows like Yellowstone and its spin-offs. But before he became a television powerhouse, Sheridan began his career writing screenplays for crime thrillers, including the movie Sicario. Although Yellowstone and his other TV projects are more widely watched now, Sicario was a crucial first step in his success.
The movie features a screenplay by Sheridan and stars Emily Blunt as FBI agent Kate Mercer. She teams up with a secretive task force headed by Alejandro Gillick, played by Benicio del Toro, to take down a cartel. The supporting cast includes Josh Brolin, Jeffrey Donovan, and Jon Bernthal.
When Sicario came out, critics loved it and it was a big success in theaters. It has a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a lot of money worldwide, especially considering it only cost $30 million to make. Now, Sicario is widely considered to be one of Taylor Sheridan’s most impressive works.
Will There Ever Be a Sicario 3?
The unexpected popularity of Sicario resulted in a sequel released in 2018. Taylor Sheridan wrote the screenplay again, but Stefano Sollima directed this time, replacing Denis Villeneuve. While the sequel didn’t receive the same critical acclaim as the first film—it earned a 62% rating on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the original’s 91%—it still performed reasonably well in theaters, sparking talk of a third installment.
Updates on Sicario 3 are still scarce, six years after the release of Day of the Soldado. There was talk at one point of having the director of Mission: Impossible and Top Gun: Maverick take the helm, but we haven’t heard much since. Given Taylor Sheridan’s current focus on television projects, it might be a while before Sicario 3 reaches the big screen – or it might not happen at all.
Sicario leaves Netflix on April 30.
