A popular actor from Stranger Things is now starring in a new horror remake. The film is a contemporary take on a famously unsettling movie, but reviewers haven’t been overwhelmingly positive, according to its Rotten Tomatoes score.
What Faces of Death reviews are saying
The 2026 remake of ‘Faces of Death’ is getting mixed reviews. While some critics acknowledge minor flaws with the franchise, many praise its effectiveness – Inverse’s Katie Rife called it “impressively nasty,” and IndieWire’s David Ehrlich gave it a B+, saying it delivers what audiences want. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman described it as a clever and thoughtful retro slasher film.
Some critics disagree with the positive reception. Jacob Oller from AV Club feels the film isn’t distinctive enough, given the amount of similar content already available online. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter questions whether it lives up to its claim of being a commentary on a classic exploitation film.
In a review for Slant Magazine, Ross McIndoe notes the film eventually strays from the thought-provoking themes of the original. Meanwhile, William Bibbiani of TheWrap praises it as a genuinely frightening and intense horror movie, surpassing many recent slasher films.
Faces of Death’s Rotten Tomatoes score revealed
Currently, the film has a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 39 critic reviews. Audience ratings haven’t been published yet.
Daniel Goldhaber directed and co-wrote the film with Isa Mazzei. Barbie Ferreira, known for her roles in various shows, plays a content moderator who stumbles upon videos that seem to show real murders. Dacre Montgomery, famous for ‘Stranger Things,’ co-stars in a surprisingly dark role that’s different from his usual work.
The controversial film, Faces of Death, will be released in US theaters on April 10, 2026. This will be IFC Films’ largest theatrical release yet.
