Sam Levinson, the writer and creator of Euphoria, is dedicating the show’s third season to the memories of three people from the cast and crew who have passed away since 2022.
At the premiere of the new season of the teen drama, creator Levinson explained the delay between seasons two and three. While factors like the strikes and cast availability played a role, he said the main reason was taking the time to properly honor those they had lost.
Angus Cloud, best known for his role as Fezco in the first two seasons of the hit show and his appearance in the horror film Abigail, passed away on July 31, 2023, at the age of 25. Later that year, in November, the show also mourned the loss of executive producer Kevin Turen.
Eric Dane, best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and as Cal in the show (the father of Nate, played by Jacob Elordi), passed away on February 19th. He was able to film his scenes for the third season despite being diagnosed with ALS.

Levinson shared that the loss of Angus was incredibly difficult. He deeply loved Angus and did everything he could to help him overcome his struggles. Sadly, Angus was one of over 73,000 Americans who died from a fentanyl overdose in 2023. Levinson said that year taught him a powerful lesson: that understanding death is what truly makes us appreciate life.
Honestly, thinking about life, you realize you can’t take any of it for granted. It really hits you that simply being alive is incredible – a real gift, and something to be deeply grateful for. It’s humbling, you know?
Season three is a tribute to Angus, Kevin, and Eric, whom we’ve lost, explained Levinson. He shared a teaching from ‘The Rebbe,’ a spiritual leader, stating that ‘you need to experience darkness to truly appreciate the light.’ Levinson added that it feels good to have overcome a difficult period.
Euphoria’s first season launched in 2019 and quickly made stars of its cast. Zendaya even won an Emmy for her role, and the show also helped raise the profiles of Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, and Jacob Elordi.
I’ve been following the show, and it’s wild to see where everyone is now! It’s been five years since we last saw Rue and her friends at East Highland. Now, Rue’s gotten herself into some serious trouble with Laurie, that drug dealer from season two. Cassie has completely changed – she’s an adult content creator and, believe it or not, she’s married to Nate! Jules is focusing on her art in college, and Lexi is working in the film industry as an assistant to a showrunner, who’s played by Sharon Stone – it’s going to be a great season!
The new season features appearances by Natasha Lyonne, known for her role in Poker Face, actor and director Eli Roth, Sam Trammell from True Blood, and the singer Rosalía. The season will have eight episodes.
Euphoria season 3 premieres on Sky Atlantic and NOW on Monday 13 April at 9pm.
