Star Wars’ Best New Movie Idea Is Officially Dead, Confirms Writer

After Disney bought Lucasfilm, they quickly tried to make more Star Wars movies beyond the main series, releasing films like Solo: A Star Wars Story and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. However, these films received mixed reviews, and the later sequel trilogy proved very controversial. This led to a long pause in Star Wars movies after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. That pause will end with the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is expected to launch a new wave of Star Wars films. Despite this renewed focus on theatrical releases, one of the most exciting Star Wars movie ideas fans had heard about has unfortunately been cancelled.

Steven Soderbergh has confirmed his planned movie focusing on Ben Solo (Adam Driver) is no longer happening. He explained to The Playlist that if the project was going to move forward, it would have. Soderbergh, along with Driver and writer Rebecca Blunt, spent almost three years developing The Hunt for Ben Solo, a story that would have continued the character’s journey after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. While Lucasfilm initially seemed enthusiastic about the idea, Disney ultimately canceled it. Despite some fans hoping for a revival after a change in studio leadership, the writer has confirmed she’s moved on to other projects. Soderbergh adopted a similar attitude, saying that once it became clear the movie wasn’t going to happen, he simply started working on something new, comparing dwelling on it to ‘complaining about the weather’ and emphasizing the need to keep moving forward.

Disney Killed Its Best Modern Era Star Wars Movie Idea

With Steven Soderbergh moving on to other projects, the proposed Ben Solo spin-off is officially cancelled. Even if Disney decided to move forward with it now, Soderbergh, the key creative force behind the idea, is no longer involved. This is a real loss for the studio, as the story had a lot of promise but will now never be told.

It’s disappointing that The Hunt for Ben Solo was cancelled, especially since Kylo Ren is considered a highlight of the recent Star Wars trilogy. Adam Driver consistently delivered a compelling and nuanced performance, bringing emotional depth to a sometimes-chaotic story. What’s particularly frustrating is that this project was Driver’s own creative idea – a passion project, not just a marketing scheme. Star Wars needs more stories like this, driven by genuine artistic vision, as we’ve seen with the critical success of shows like Andor. Unfortunately, Disney seems to be repeating past mistakes by avoiding creative risks, instead of embracing unique perspectives.

The Mandalorian & Grogu is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 22, 2026.
