Russell Crowe, the famous actor known for Gladiator, is taking on a role similar to Sylvester Stallone in Rocky in a new MMA movie. Although he won’t be physically fighting at 62, Crowe co-wrote the script with David Frigerio and plays the trainer of a former fighter forced to return to the ring. This time, he’s fighting not just for himself, but to save his brother’s life.
As a huge movie fan, I was really excited to see the first four minutes of this new MMA film! They just dropped the footage, and wow, it throws you right into the action. It definitely doesn’t pull any punches – you immediately get a sense of how intense and brutal it is to fight professionally, and how real the consequences can be.
The scene opens with Sammy, the trainer, managing the energy in the locker room. We then meet Patton James, played by Daniel MacPherson, who’s preparing for a tough fight. Crowe delivers a compelling performance as the dedicated trainer, even showing him vomiting from nerves before the match. He motivates his fighter by repeating the phrase, “If I can breathe, I can think. If I think, I can win,” creating an incredibly inspiring and energetic opening that will leave you feeling empowered.
Tyler Atkins directs Beast, an action film arriving in theaters on April 10, 2026. The story follows a former MMA champion who’s forced out of retirement to fight when his brother’s life is threatened. He teams up with his old trainer for one last, challenging fight against the current champion—a fierce opponent determined to end the ex-champion’s career publicly.

Despite mixed martial arts (MMA) being popular for years, there haven’t been many truly excellent movies about it, beyond films like Warrior with Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s The Smashing Machine. However, the new film Beast could change that. Starring Russell Crowe, who also co-wrote the script, and featuring a strong cast including Daniel MacPherson, Luke Hemsworth, Mojean Aria, Kelly Gale, George Burgess, Saphira Moran, and Bren Foster, Beast has all the ingredients to finally give MMA the compelling cinematic treatment it deserves.
