If you’re looking for a relaxing game, Nintendo’s Animal Crossing series is the best. Players enjoy logging in to unwind, personalize their island, chat with animal neighbors, and create a world that feels personal. What makes Animal Crossing so appealing is its simple, charming gameplay and focus on daily routines – a welcome escape from the fast pace of many modern games. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is incredibly close to being the ultimate cozy game, and there’s one specific addition that would make it perfect.
It’s clear that Animal Crossing could successfully evolve into a farming simulator. The recent 2.0 update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons added basic farming features – growing, buying, and selling crops – which proved incredibly popular with players. Nintendo should build on this success with the next Animal Crossing game on the Switch 2, fully embracing the farming sim genre while still retaining the elements fans already enjoy.
Turning Animal Crossing Into a True Farm Life Experience

Nintendo could significantly boost Animal Crossing‘s appeal by adding more in-depth farming elements. Stardew Valley proved how popular this type of game can be, inspiring many similar titles. However, expanding Animal Crossing to include a full farming experience wouldn’t take away from what players already love about it – it would actually make the game even better and unique. Picture having your own farm alongside your village, where you can grow different crops depending on the season, improve your farm over time, and work towards long-term goals. Importantly, this could all happen within Animal Crossing‘s existing real-time gameplay, which sets it apart from most other farming simulators.
I’ve already sunk a huge amount of time into Animal Crossing: New Leaf and New Horizons, and that was before the farming update! With more detailed tools and options for planning crops, I know I’d lose even more hours. I already obsess over things like bench placement, so adding features like irrigation would be amazing. It would really let players get creative and customize their islands even further, which is exactly what the series is all about.
Expanding the farming aspects of Animal Crossing could really boost the game’s economy. Allowing players to sell crops, make items, and trade with villagers would make everyday gameplay more engaging. This would add depth without sacrificing the relaxing atmosphere the series is known for. Turning Animal Crossing into a more robust farming simulator, while still keeping the elements fans love, would attract players who already enjoy cozy farming games. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 seems like the perfect system to make this happen.
Farm and City as Two Separate Spaces

To really make a farming-focused Animal Crossing game work, it should be designed around having separate spaces for farming and town life. Players could manage their own farm and also visit a nearby town, creating a good balance between the relaxing experience of farming and the fun of interacting with other characters – both things that make the Animal Crossing series special.
This new system could also revamp the way players deal with their debt to Tom Nook, a key character in the series. Linking farm income to debt repayment would make it feel more realistic. Players could begin with a small farm and expand it by making incremental payments and upgrades. This would make farming feel rewarding, as progress would be directly tied to earning money and paying off debts – a much more satisfying experience than simply selling items for slow progress.
What’s really exciting about this design is that it would give the villagers much more to do and make them feel more alive. Imagine a town bustling with characters who have their own daily lives, shops, and unique personalities – it would make interacting with them much more interesting. This would add a strong social element to the game and give players more motivation to explore. I envision finishing a day of work on the farm and then going into town to see what everyone’s up to – that kind of routine could keep the game feeling new and engaging. Plus, watching both the farm and the town develop and change over time would give players a better sense of accomplishment and progress.
Animal Crossing and Farming Feels Like the Natural Next Step

At its heart, Animal Crossing is about building a comfortable, personalized home. Adding more robust farming and increasing how players connect with the game world could make it even more relaxing and enjoyable. The game already has a great base; it just needs further refinement. I think this is the perfect path for the series, as it improves on existing strengths while adding features players love. If Nintendo takes this approach, the next Animal Crossing could be the most wonderfully cozy game ever.
What makes Animal Crossing so special is that each game feels unique. Animal Crossing: New Horizons lets you create your own tropical island paradise, a feature no other game had before. So, even if a future Animal Crossing game focuses on running a farm, it doesn’t mean the series will be limited to that. The next game could build on that idea or try something completely different. Nintendo consistently demonstrates its creativity, and this is especially true with the Animal Crossing series.
The ‘cozy game’ genre is incredibly popular, and farming simulators are a huge part of that. Many developers have successfully created their own versions of these games. While Nintendo doesn’t have a dedicated farming game, Animal Crossing would be a perfect fit. Adding more farming elements would appeal to current fans and attract new players. I personally find it hard to stick with farming sims, even Stardew Valley, but I think if Animal Crossing fully embraced this style of gameplay, I would absolutely love it.
