Mindy Kaling is returning to the world of workplace comedies with a new series, Not Suitable for Work, which many are already comparing to The Office. The show will premiere on June 2, 2026, and the streaming service has just released some initial photos.
Just to clarify, this show isn’t a direct sequel to The Office or The Mindy Project, and it’s not intended to take its place in the same universe. However, it’s easy to see why people are making comparisons. Not Suitable for Work is a single-camera comedy set in an office, and it seems to share a similar feel to those shows, focusing on young professionals navigating their careers, friendships, and the challenges of becoming adults.
This new show moves the setting from Scranton to Manhattan’s Murray Hill, focusing on five ambitious twenty-somethings. They’re all driven to succeed in their careers and find happiness while working at a top investment bank. This change suggests the show will swap the dull routine of an ordinary office for the fast-paced, stressful world of finance, creating a different feel even though it’s still a comedy about the workplace.

Ella Hunt stars as AJ Pascarelli, a driven new analyst, in Hulu’s Not Suitable for Work, alongside Avantika as Abby Chilukuri. The show also features Jay Ellis, Will Angus, Jack Martin, and Nicholas Duvernay, with Constance Wu, Ego Nwodim, Victor Garber, and Judy Gold making guest appearances. The impressive cast suggests Hulu is creating a fast-paced comedy focused on a group of characters, rather than building the show around one main star.
Hulu is releasing the show in a way that’s designed to keep viewers hooked. The first three episodes will be available right away, and then two new episodes will drop every Tuesday until the season ends on June 23rd. This release schedule could be great for a comedy about a group of people, allowing audiences to quickly connect with the characters without making the season feel too drawn out.

It’s been over 20 years since The Office originally aired, so simply recreating it today wouldn’t work well. Mindy Kaling has even described the show as potentially unsuitable for modern audiences. She explained that the writers, many of whom she still talks to, often discuss how much of the show they likely couldn’t create now, because tastes and sensitivities have changed significantly over time.
Many viewers see Greg Daniels’ new mockumentary, The Paper, which debuted on Peacock in September 2025, as the natural follow-up to The Office. Mindy Kaling’s Not Suitable for Work, however, is a separate Hulu production she both created and oversees. Unlike The Paper, it doesn’t seem like Kaling is trying to replicate the success of The Office; instead, she’s bringing her expertise to the workplace comedy genre with a fresh and insightful approach.
Based on early previews, Not Suitable for Work probably won’t be a carbon copy of The Office, but it has the potential to deliver what many viewers are looking for in a contemporary workplace comedy: a realistic, funny, and relatable portrayal of the chaos, stress, and drive found in today’s work environments.
