Fast-paced action adventure game Koshmar: The Last Reverie announced for consoles, PC

Purple Ray Studio, the creators of Boti: Byteland Overclocked, are developing Koshmar: The Last Reverie, a quick-paced, single-player action adventure game. Set in a world of dreams and nightmares, the game’s setting draws inspiration from central European and Victorian cultures. Koshmar is planned for release on PC via Steam and unspecified consoles in 2027.

Here is an overview of the game, via Purple Ray Studio:

About

In Koshmar: The Last Reverie, you play as Violet, a teenager who discovers she can control her dreams. This single-player action adventure takes place in a world where dreams and nightmares collide. When terrifying nightmares start bleeding into her dream world, Violet must journey into dangerous and surreal landscapes – both real and imagined – to save her sanity.

This game is a dark and stylish third-person adventure with roguelike and RPG features. It offers quick, strategic battles where your choices matter, but you’ll need to manage your character’s sanity to avoid falling into a spiral of delusion and madness.

Story and Setting

Violet leads a dull and unhappy life, feeling detached and pessimistic. But when she sleeps, she escapes into a vibrant and fulfilling world – a welcome break from her difficult reality. She struggles to balance these two very different existences, until eventually, they start to fall apart.

I’m completely hooked on Violet’s story! She’s the only one who gets what’s really happening with this sickness – it’s like a doorway into other people’s nightmares, and these crazy Nightmare Rifts are popping up everywhere. Following her as she tries to figure things out is wild; she’s traveling from town to town, and even diving into people’s minds, meeting all sorts of interesting characters along the way. It’s not just about fighting monsters, either – she’s really battling with her own inner demons through all the tough choices she has to make. Beyond finding out about that mysterious companion she keeps seeing and where this sickness comes from, I’m honestly most worried about her. I keep wondering, after everything she goes through, what kind of person will Violet be when it’s all over?

The world of Koshmar: The Last Reverie is a fantastical place drawing inspiration from central European and Victorian settings. It mixes fantasy with historical details, psychological themes, and myths from our own world. The game incorporates a real historical event – a sleeping epidemic that affected Europe in the 1700s – along with the art and culture of the 1920s, and folklore, fables, and phobias from various cultures.

Gameplay

The main part of the game focuses on Violet as she explores the city, delves into nightmares and special areas called Nightmare Rifts, solves puzzles, and gains new abilities and weapons she never thought possible.

  • Combat – Consisting of a dynamic, adrenaline-fueled system with emphasis on:
    • Equippable items to change Violet’s stats and refine players’ builds that support different playstyles (aggressive/defensive)
    • Precise timing, strategic positioning, and use of environmental objects/environment to the player’s advantage
    • Diverse enemies with varied attack patterns and vulnerabilities
    • Fluid, dreamy, dance-like motions by the protagonist
  • Exploration – In the city, players explore story-driven districts, interact with NPCs, take on side quests, solve more complex puzzles, investigate the mystery behind the Nightmares, and work toward opening Core Rifts by closing smaller Nightmare Rifts. Exploration is also shaped by Violet’s sanity state, which players can manage carefully or deliberately push toward one extreme.
  • Meaningful Choices – Players have agency over Violet’s sanity in the physical world, and that state affects both gameplay and narrative progression. Sanity is influenced by dialogue choices, quest decisions, combat behavior, and world interactions such as stealing, donating, keeping items, or giving items. Violet’s appearance can be altered by the player and influenced by her current state of sanity, which is visible to those around her, with varying consequences.
