Daredevil Star Charlie Cox Teases The ‘Chilling’ Comic Arc They Want For Born Again Season 3

Not all future Daredevil stories will necessarily focus on the traditional main character, at least not immediately. However, there’s still a wealth of material to explore – the comic books offer a huge collection of storylines – and Charlie Cox, who plays Daredevil in the popular Disney+ Marvel series, has expressed interest in adapting a specific story arc.

So, I’m hearing that Charlie Cox is really pushing to adapt the “Devil In Cell Block D” story arc – which was written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Michael Lark – for the third season of Daredevil: Born Again. It’s a storyline I’m super excited about, and it sounds like he really wants to bring it to life!

Even though only the fourth episode of Season 2 is available on Disney+, production of Season 3 is already well underway. Photos have surfaced online hinting at a reunion of The Defenders, and Charlie Cox is actively advocating for the ‘Devil in Cell Block D’ storyline.

Charlie Cox Stakes Claim for ‘Chilling’ Arc in Daredevil: Born Again

But why exactly does that arc make Cox smirk so, well, devilishly?

One of the most impactful Daredevil storylines involves a request to move Matt Murdock out of protective custody at Rikers Island and into the general prison population. This is incredibly dangerous for him, as he’s previously sent many of those inmates to prison, and he’d no longer be safe.

He explained that there’s a scene where Ben Urich witnesses the judge deciding to send Matt Murdock back to the general prison population, no matter if he’s Daredevil or not. Urich recalls the most unsettling part was seeing a faint smile on Murdock’s face – it almost seemed like Murdock wanted to be sent back.

This fits Murdock’s character perfectly, considering how he’s portrayed in both the Netflix series Daredevil and the Disney+ show Daredevil: Born Again. He’s often driven by anger stemming from past trauma, which clashes with his strong sense of right and wrong. But there’s also a strange, almost unsettling enjoyment he seems to get from facing danger – he’ll even smile right before a chaotic situation explodes.

Two Surprise Returns In Daredevil: Born Again Season 3?

Cox recalled first reading that scene and immediately recognizing it as a key insight into the character’s inner world and motivations. He described this as a prime example of the character Matt’s duplicity. Cox explained that Matt often believes he’s doing the right thing, but he’s constantly battling impulses towards chaos, mania, and violence. When those darker impulses take over, Cox noted, the character actually finds a disturbing enjoyment in it.

He also pointed out another detail suggesting Frank Castle (the Punisher) might return in Season 3. He praised the Punisher’s cameo in Devil of Cell Block D, highlighting a smart deception where the Punisher pretends to use Murdock for a breakout. He added that the subsequent riot was extremely violent and visually striking in the script.

Currently, Spider-Man is featured in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but before that, The Punisher will appear in a special Disney+ presentation called The Punisher: One Last Kill in April. There’s no indication that Frank Castle will continue the storyline from Season 1, and since Ben Urich (played by Vondie Curtis-Hall) died in the Netflix series, any appearance of the Devil of Cell Block D would likely be shown as a flashback.

It’s still uncertain what exactly will happen, but one thing is certain about Season 3, according to Cox: expect a lot more violence – in fact, all-out violence.
