Project Hail Mary video game confirmed for 2026 after box office success – but there’s a catch

Following its huge success in theaters, the novel Project Hail Mary is being adapted into a video game.

Based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel, the movie Project Hail Mary features Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, an unwilling astronaut tasked with a dangerous mission: discovering why the sun is fading.

As of today, the movie is one of the highest-grossing films of 2026, having earned $425 million worldwide.

Building on the show’s popularity, Amazon and MGM, along with the game developer Maze Theory, have announced they’re creating a video game based on the story, and Andy Weir is involved in the development.

Unfortunately, there is a catch for many of us.

Maze Theory, the team known for VR games like Thief VR: Legacy of the Shadow and Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, is creating a new “mixed reality game” called Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars.

The game is set during a critical, previously unknown part of the Hail Mary mission. Players will experience the story through Grace’s eyes, working to identify and repair a problem on the spaceship – a challenge that will test the boundaries of scientific knowledge and engineering skills.

Everyone is likely wondering if Grace’s alien companion, Rocky, will be in the game, and we’re happy to confirm that he will! Players will be able to develop their bond with Rocky throughout the story.

With his move into game development, Andy Weir explained that fans have been eager for new content since he created Project Hail Mary. This game is the first expansion of that story beyond the book and upcoming movie, offering a unique experience through mixed reality.

We still don’t know who will be replacing Ryan Gosling in the role of Grace.

I don’t currently own a VR headset, but the game Rocky is making me seriously consider getting one.
