While it’s not performing quite as strongly as The Super Mario Bros. Movie at this stage, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is still a major success – the themed popcorn buckets sold out quickly! However, it’s proven to be a divisive film. Many feel it prioritizes setting up a larger cinematic universe over telling a strong, standalone story, drawing comparisons to Iron Man 2. The cast includes returning favorites Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, and Toad, alongside new characters like Yoshi, Bowser Jr., Princess Rosalina, Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2, and Fox McCloud. Notably absent this time are Donkey and Cranky Kong.
Fox is a key character, especially considering he first appeared outside of the Mario universe in his own series, Star Fox. This makes us wonder which other Nintendo franchises would translate well to film. Fox, like Yoshi, has strong potential, and his inclusion here likely aims to pave the way for his own movie. It leaves us thinking about other possibilities, too.
5) Pikmin

Pikmin make a very brief appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie – just a few seconds. However, Captain Olimar isn’t shown at all.
Honestly, putting those classic Pikmin characters in Galaxy really feels like they officially belong in the Nintendo movie world now. I’m seriously hoping this means we’ll get a full-on Pikmin movie someday – imagine Olimar running around in a CGI version of PNF-404! And you know what? The Pikmin themselves could totally be Nintendo’s version of the Minions – they’re cute, helpful, and could add a lot of fun to any movie.
4) Kid Icarus

Only three dedicated Kid Icarus games have been released: the original on the NES in 1986, Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters for the Game Boy in 1991, and Kid Icarus: Uprising for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012. However, the series’ main character, Pit, has also appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. 4, and the popular Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Pit is a popular enough character to deserve a movie. He’s appeared in several games beyond his own series, including Super Smash Bros., and has a clear character arc: learning to protect his world despite his limited flight time.
3) F-Zero

The fast-paced racing series F-Zero is still popular today, with F-Zero 99 – a retro-style online racer – released for the Nintendo Switch in 2023. The series is known for taking the fun, colorful world of cartoon racing and turning it into a thrilling, high-speed experience.
Look, if they ever make a third Mario movie, they have to include a nod to F-Zero. It just needs to happen! And if we ever get a Super Smash Bros. movie, it’s not complete without at least 20 minutes of Captain Falcon yelling “Falcon Punch!” and sending someone flying so hard they end up in another dimension. Seriously, that’s a non-negotiable part of the experience!
2) Kirby

Alongside Mario, Kirby is one of Nintendo’s most popular characters. Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is a truly exceptional game.
A Kirby movie would look amazing on the big screen! It would be so much fun to see Kirby swallow enemies and copy their abilities, just like we’ve seen in the Mario movies, where Mario and Luigi used costumes to gain powers like flying with the Cape Feather or transforming with the Frog Suit. And a movie based on Kirby absolutely needs a thrilling Air Ride sequence – it could be the movie’s equivalent of the Podrace from Star Wars.
1) Metroid

A Metroid movie would be fantastic! Imagine a *Aliensstyle adventure, but with a Nintendo twist – like if Ripley traded her spacesuit for an orange one and equipped a powerful arm cannon.
This film feels like a good introduction to horror for younger viewers. It probably won’t be scary enough for a PG-13 rating – the filmmakers likely want broad appeal like the Super Mario movies – but it could successfully add a slightly spookier side to this generally lighthearted video game movie world.
