Disney is famous for creating beloved animated heroes like Simba, Aladdin, Moana, and Wreck-It Ralph, but they also successfully adapt stories with characters people already know and love. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series has been especially successful for Disney, resulting in both animated movies and live-action films. The series started as a set of novels in 2007, and author Jeff Kinney recently suggested that more Diary of a Wimpy Kid adaptations are on the way.
Jeff Kinney recently revealed on the “Da Bois Podcast” that a new Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie is currently being made at Disney. He shared that he’s actually writing the script now, calling it one of the most significant stories from the book series. When asked about rumors that the next film would be based on Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway, Kinney playfully avoided giving a direct answer, saying he couldn’t confirm or deny the speculation, but hinted that the rumors might be on the right track.
What is The Getaway?

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway is the twelfth book in the popular series. In this story, Greg Heffley and his family try to escape the winter cold with a vacation to a tropical island. The official description promises a funny adventure: hoping for rest and relaxation, the Heffleys find that paradise isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, facing problems like sunburn, upset stomachs, and dangerous animals. The book follows whether the family can salvage their trip or if it will end in complete disaster.
The newest Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie, The Last Straw, came out in 2025 and went straight to Disney+ instead of theaters. While there have been live-action Diary of a Wimpy Kid films, the recent ones, including the upcoming movie, are made using computer-generated animation. With twenty-one books already published, Disney has plenty of material to adapt into future films. The Getaway, for instance, marked the halfway point in the book series. Author Greg Kinney hasn’t indicated that the series will end soon, suggesting more stories could be made into Disney movies down the line.
