Development is progressing quickly on the next Superman movie, now officially called Man of Tomorrow. David Corenswet will return as Superman, and Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor. This adds an interesting layer to the title, as it’s unclear whether ‘Man of Tomorrow’ refers to Superman or Luthor. The film will also feature Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, and Aaron Pierre will reprise his role as Green Lantern John Stewart, bringing in more characters from the DC Universe.
As a huge DC fan, I’ve been following all the casting news, and one role has been particularly shrouded in mystery: Maxima, the queen of Almerac. There’s been a lot of buzz about who might play her. This morning, Deadline reported that Marisa Abela, Adria Arjona, and Ella Purnell had all auditioned for the part. We all know actors testing for roles is standard procedure, so it seemed like an announcement could be coming soon. But James Gunn quickly shut that down, calling the report completely false and saying it was just bad information.
Man of Tomorrow Casting Report Trashed By James Gunn

James Gunn criticized a report from Deadline, calling it inaccurate and poorly researched. He expressed disappointment, stating that he would have corrected the information if contacted. Gunn clarified his relationship with actress Adria Arjona, with whom he’s worked since ‘Belko Experiment,’ and confirmed he’s a fan of Marisa Abela and Ella Purnell, though he hasn’t met them personally. He described the report as false.
A fan asked James Gunn if a recent post meant Maxima would be in Man of Tomorrow but not played by one of three specific actresses. Gunn immediately clarified that he hadn’t confirmed anything about Maxima’s appearance. He explained that he’s already cast all the major roles in the film, but there’s still one role left to be filled to complete the main cast.
James Gunn’s comments today—including confirmations, hints, and denials—have led many to think Maxima will appear in the movie. Rumors have circulated about her role, and Gunn’s recent statement that one character is still unconfirmed has further convinced fans she’ll be included.
In DC Comics, Maxima is a powerful character with a complex history with Superman – sometimes she’s his enemy, sometimes his friend, and they’ve even been romantically involved. With Brainiac confirmed as the villain in the upcoming movie, and the mysterious “Salvation” planet still part of the story, it’s possible we could see characters from outer space appear. If Maxima does end up in the film, James Gunn will be the one to announce it when the time is right.
Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to fly into theaters on July 9, 2027.
