5 Games That Need Remakes

I’m not a big fan of the current trend of remaking things – the idea that everything needs to be updated or revisited, either to appeal to modern audiences or simply to keep popular franchises alive. We’re seeing this happen a lot in TV, like with the new HBO Harry Potter series which came out just over 20 years after the original movies. Video games are also getting this treatment; The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, for example, recently received a major overhaul less than two decades after its initial release. There’s a constant stream of requests for remakes of games, movies, and shows, and it often feels unnecessary and repetitive.

While many older movies and TV shows are still enjoyable today, some video games really deserve a remake. This isn’t about disliking the originals – many were fantastic in their time! – but because either they’re hard to play now due to outdated technology or simply because modern advancements could make them even better. These games could truly benefit from a fresh update.

5. The Simpsons: Hit & Run

The Simpsons: Hit & Run is a highly regarded game, and rightfully so. It was incredibly enjoyable thanks to its open-world exploration and arcade-style driving, and it perfectly captured the wacky humor of the TV show. Many consider it one of the best games of its time, and there’s still strong demand for a modern console release. Sadly, it’s currently only playable on the PS2, GameCube, and original Xbox – and it’s surprisingly one of the many titles fans hope will be added to the Xbox Series X/S backwards compatibility list.

Many fans have tried to recreate The Simpsons: Hit & Run, and their efforts, often shared on YouTube, have shown both how much people want a remake and how great it could be. A new version wouldn’t just revisit the original game’s world – it could expand it with locations and content from later seasons of The Simpsons. The show has changed a lot since Hit & Run came out, so a remake could include all the new characters, running gags, and details that fans have come to love over the past two decades.

4. Metal Gear Solid

While Metal Gear Solid was technically updated once before, it hasn’t been fully remade. Back in 2004, Silicon Knights created Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes for the Nintendo GameCube, which updated the graphics and gameplay with elements from the second game, along with some minor script and voice acting changes. Compared to modern remasters like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Twin Snakes feels more like an enhanced version than a complete overhaul. Therefore, a true remake of Metal Gear Solid hasn’t happened yet.

The original Metal Gear Solid is a fantastic game, and seeing how impressive Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is makes many players hope for a similar remake of the first game. While the original had a lot of promise, later games built upon its ideas and achieved greater success. Konami clearly has the opportunity to enhance the original Metal Gear Solid and bring it up to the standards of its sequels. Luckily, Konami is listening to fan requests, so a remake seems like a real possibility.

3. Xenogears

Released in 1998, Xenogears laid the groundwork for the acclaimed Xenoblade Chronicles and the fan-favorite Xenosaga. This JRPG is known for its deep story, exciting action, powerful emotions, impressive mech combat, and unforgettable cutscenes. Unfortunately, Square Enix hasn’t done much with Xenogears since its release. While fans have created mods to keep the game alive, we still haven’t seen a modern remaster or the long-awaited remake.

Despite being a fantastic game when it first came out, Xenogears could really benefit from a remake. While dedicated fans have fixed some of its technical issues with the Perfect Works mod, those problems still held back the original. Xenogears is also well-known for being unfinished – the developers, though ambitious, lacked the experience to fully realize their vision, leading to a finale that mostly summarized the story. A remake would give the creators a chance to finally deliver the Xenogears experience they originally intended. Hopefully, Square Enix will either allow a remake to happen or decide to revisit the series themselves.

2. Chrono Trigger

Similar to Xenogears, Chrono Trigger hasn’t gotten a proper follow-up despite being incredibly popular with fans. It’s available on mobile and PC, but surprisingly, not on modern gaming consoles. Square Enix should really revisit this franchise, and a remake would be fantastic. As a fan myself, I think Chrono Trigger is already a nearly flawless game. It was ahead of its time with many features that newer JRPGs are just now adding, and its story is exceptional.

Like many games from its time, Chrono Trigger shows its age. It truly deserves a complete remake to fully realize its amazing story and unforgettable characters in a way we haven’t seen before. While hugely popular with those who played it originally and JRPG fans, it’s likely unknown to many others. A remake would be a great way to introduce this fantastic game to a wider audience and give it the recognition it deserves.

1. The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time

Out of all the games mentioned, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time seems the most likely candidate for a remake. In fact, rumors have been circulating for years suggesting one is already in development. It’s easy to understand why fans are hoping for it, and why Nintendo would want to create it. Nintendo has a history of successfully remaking popular games – much like Disney – and capitalizing on that nostalgia.

Honestly, Ocarina of Time really needs a remake. Don’t get me wrong, the original is perfect as is, but Zelda games have evolved so much since then. I’d love to see what a modern development team could do with it – imagine how amazing it would look with today’s technology! That’s what remakes are all about, right? Taking a classic we all love and reimagining it with everything we’ve learned in the gaming industry. It’s about making it feel fresh and exciting again, just like when we first played it. A lot of people are hoping for an Ocarina of Time remake, and I’m one of them – I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens soon.
