Forget The Jedi And The Sith, Star Wars Introduces A Secret Third Thing

Be warned, this article reveals spoilers for episode 2 of Maul – Shadow Lord. The Star Wars story has recently presented a new path, separate from both the Jedi and the Sith, and it’s a particularly compelling development. For a long time, the conflict between the Jedi and the Sith has been central to Star Wars. The entire saga revolves around the struggle between the light and dark sides of the Force, and these two groups have traditionally been the primary way that conflict has been shown in the Star Wars films.

While the conflict between the Jedi and Sith has always been central to Star Wars, the franchise is increasingly exploring stories beyond that war. The series Maul – Shadow Lord exemplifies this shift. Although Maul started as a Sith apprentice to Darth Sidious in The Phantom Menace, he’s moved away from the Sith and is now focused on building his Shadow Collective – a powerful alliance of criminal organizations operating in the galactic underworld.

In Shadow Lord, Maul has moved beyond being a Sith and isn’t a Jedi either—he’s something entirely new within the Star Wars universe. While he still wields the dark side of the Force and isn’t a hero, he’s independent of both Palpatine and the Empire. This unique position for Maul could be what makes Maul – Shadow Lord so popular with fans.

Maul Isn’t A Sith Anymore, But He’s Still Certainly Not A Jedi

After watching the first two episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord, it’s obvious that Maul has moved beyond being a Sith, and he’ll never be a Jedi either. While he still taps into the dark side of the Force, his beliefs, motivations, and overall outlook don’t match the Sith way of life. A prime example is his relentless quest for revenge against Darth Sidious, which actively opposes the goals of the Empire.

Darth Maul is still driven by anger, self-interest, and a desire for wealth. In the Shadow Lord series, he’s battling the Empire solely to get revenge on Palpatine for betraying him and killing his brother, Savage Opress. Despite his personal motivations, Maul is still fighting against a cruel and oppressive government and working to defeat Palpatine and the Sith. Ultimately, his actions show he’s moved away from the path of a true Sith Lord.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve been really fascinated by Maul’s storyline in the expanded universe, specifically his connection with the character Devon Izara from Shadow Lord. It’s a really interesting twist because it shows how far he’s strayed from the typical Sith Lord path. He doesn’t just want to destroy her, like a lot of villains would. He genuinely wants to corrupt her, yes, but also empower her – to make her strong enough to fight the Empire herself. Their first conversation actually hinted that he’s starting to see things the Jedi way, which is wild considering how much he used to despise them! It’s a huge contrast to Palpatine, who never cared about his apprentices growing stronger, only about exploiting their abilities for his own goals.

Trailers for Maul – Shadow Lord show glimpses of Maul battling Marrok, an Inquisitor who serves Darth Vader. Maul has earned the enmity of the Empire and the Sith, and they’ve now targeted him as well. While it’s unknown why they’re fighting, the fact that Maul is even facing an Inquisitor suggests he’s no longer a Sith Lord.

Even though Maul is fighting against the Empire, he’s not a Jedi. He continues to use the dark side for his own purposes and is driven by selfishness. His forces are even harming innocent people on Janix. As seen in Star Wars Rebels, which happens years later, he doesn’t become good later on in the Shadow Lord storyline either.

Maul Doesn’t Fit Into Any Of Star Wars’ Categories For Force Users

Darth Maul doesn’t quite fit the traditional definitions of a Jedi or Sith, and he doesn’t belong to any other established Force-using groups. However, Star Wars has recently introduced more unusual Force-sensitive groups that fall outside of the Jedi and Sith classifications. For example, the Knights of Ren from the sequel trilogy are a dark side organization separate from the Sith, and the Path of the Open Hand from the High Republic era, while opposing the Jedi, isn’t considered Sith either.

Even the mysterious character from The Acolyte exists in the gray area between the Jedi and the Sith. Despite Star Wars’ attempts to define Force users who aren’t strictly Jedi or Sith, Maul doesn’t neatly fit into any of those categories. He seems to use the Force solely based on his own principles, owing no loyalty to any group or person—he doesn’t even fully trust his own allies, such as Rook Kast.

What makes Maul such a compelling character is that he doesn’t neatly fit into any established group of Force users. Unlike groups like the Knights of Ren, who have a clear code and purpose, Maul’s motivations are unpredictable. We can only be sure that in future stories like Maul – Shadow Lord, he’ll act in ways that benefit himself. He’s even capable of doing good things – like freeing Devon Izara from prison – as long as it serves his own goals.

Maul is unpredictable right now, which promises plenty of surprises in Maul – Shadow Lord. He might act like a classic Sith villain one episode, then show a more understanding side towards the Jedi the next. With no clear rules guiding him, Maul – Shadow Lord is free to defy expectations at every turn.
