Peacock is anticipating a major success with its upcoming series, which has already earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes – a rare achievement for any new show.
Okay, so I just finished the first few episodes of this new show, and honestly, the critics are loving it. Right now, it’s sitting at a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a fantastic start! Now, it’s worth noting that’s based on just five reviews so far, and that score will probably change as more come in. But it’s another really promising release from Peacock, and it seems like they’re on a roll with quality content.
Over the past year, several shows have premiered, including the science fiction spy thriller The Copenhagen Test, the spy thriller Ponies, and The Office spinoff The Paper. Both The Paper and Ponies have been renewed for additional episodes, though Peacock has not yet decided if it will renew The Copenhagen Test.
What Happens in The Miniature Wife?
The new sci-fi romantic comedy drama is inspired by Manuel Gonzales’ 2013 short story collection of the same name. It was created by Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner, and stars Elizabeth Banks, who also serves as an executive producer, alongside another prominent actor.
The show centers around Lindy and Les, a married couple facing an extraordinary challenge. Les is on the verge of a major scientific breakthrough – shrinking objects to incredibly small sizes. But when an accident happens, he accidentally shrinks Lindy down to just six inches tall! Now, he’s in a race against time to find a way to restore her to normal.
Let me tell you, the cast of The Miniature Wife is seriously impressive. We all know and love Jennifer Lawrence from The Hunger Games and Nicholas Braun thanks to Succession, but they’re joined by a ton of other fantastic actors. Zoe Lister-Jones, Sofia Rosinsky, O-T Fagbenle, and Sian Clifford all deliver great performances, and the show also features Ronny Chieng, Aasif Mandvi, Rong Fu, and Tricia Black. It’s a really strong ensemble cast for this ten-episode sci-fi series.
What Are Critics Saying About The Miniature Wife?
Critics generally liked the series, calling it a fun replacement for movies like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Downsizing. Craig Mathieson of The Age described it as a “wonderfully silly comedy,” and while he acknowledged the show’s genre-bending might be confusing to some, he was ultimately impressed by the creative plot and interesting side stories.
Sherin Nicole at RogerEbert.com notes that we’re currently seeing a lot of psychological thrillers starring women, and while The Miniature Wife is labeled a dramedy, it follows a similar thrilling pattern – which she sees as a positive. She’s particularly interested in a story’s deeper meaning and the themes it explores, beyond just what happens in the plot.
Ben Gibbons from ScreenRant praised the series, calling it hilariously funny and highlighting a talented cast that transforms a simple concept into a lively and engaging show. While it remains to be seen if it will maintain its high rating with further reviews, the show promises to be a worthwhile watch.
The Miniature Wife premieres on Peacock on Apr. 9.
