While The DCU Ignores Him, Aquaman Just Proved He’s DC Comics’ Most Underrated Hero

Look, Aquaman might not be the first DC hero people think of, but I’m telling you, he’s seriously underrated. The last year has been a whirlwind for Arthur Curry – he’s dealt with loss, built a whole new team, and even fought for the fate of the universe against Darkseid! Through it all, he’s become a much more powerful hero, especially now that he’s connected to this ancient, mystical force called the Blue. Honestly, I think we’ve only seen a glimpse of what he’s truly capable of. He’s still evolving, and that’s exciting!

Following the events of DC K.O., Aquaman, along with the other tournament participants, received a glimpse of what’s needed to defend the DC Universe against Darkseid’s return. Instead of focusing solely on Earth’s oceans, Aquaman is now extending his protection throughout the universe, linking different worlds with structures called ‘Lighthouses.’ As Arthur begins this new mission, he’s demonstrating the full extent of his power and proving why he’s a truly formidable, yet often underestimated, hero.

Aquaman Reveals a Secret New Ice Power

In the latest issue of Emperor Aquaman (#16), Arthur is helping his wife, Mera, regain her ability to control water. She’d lost those powers in a previous storyline, Absolute Power, and they had temporarily transferred to Aquaman. Now fully in control of water himself, Aquaman is able to restore Mera’s powers without losing his own. Their training is interrupted by King Shark, but surprisingly, he’s not there to cause trouble. He had a vision telling him to follow and protect Aquaman, and pledges his loyalty to Arthur.

King Shark teams up with Aquaman and his friends Karshon, Titanus, and Zan, and they travel to a distant planet in need of assistance. They discover a world inhabited by insect-like creatures who have curiously constructed a lighthouse anticipating Aquaman’s arrival. But things aren’t what they seem – the insectoids are actually infected by parasites. One of them warns Aquaman that these parasites intend to spread to other planets and take over other life forms.

Aquaman realizes the parasites flourish in warmth and quickly develops a solution. He uses his ability to control water to locate all of the parasitic spores. Then, he cools the water around them, freezing the spores solid. This allows the insect-like creatures they’ve infected to regain control of themselves and their planets. Aquaman collects all the frozen parasites into a single mass, intending to discover their origin and return them home once he can.

Aquaman’s Ongoing Title is Helping Him Beat the Lame Allegations

Look, as a huge DC fan, I’ve always thought Aquaman was a really cool character. But for years, he got a bad rap because of the old Super Friends cartoon – everyone remembered him just ‘talking to fish’! And honestly, shows like The Big Bang Theory and Family Guy kept that joke alive for way too long. The recent Aquaman movie did a lot to change things, but now that the DCEU is over, it feels like we’re back to a lack of content showing just how amazing Aquaman can be.

What I really love about the current Aquaman run by Adams and Timms isn’t just that it makes Aquaman stronger, it’s how he’s learning to use his powers. It’s so cool to see him figure things out as he goes! Like, in this latest issue, he wasn’t even sure he could freeze water, but he kept trying and experimenting until he actually did it – something we’ve never seen him do before! And that’s on top of all the other awesome stuff he’s discovered in this series, like controlling blood just as easily as water. It’s been a really creative and exciting journey to watch him grow.

Aquaman might not ever be as popular as Batman or Superman, but it’s important to recognize what a strong hero he is. He’s a smart strategist, a natural leader, and always strives to improve. His ability to control water, even turning it to ice, showcases just how clever he is. If you’ve questioned Aquaman’s heroic qualities, this series really demonstrates what makes him a great hero.
