Actress Aubrey Plaza, who often plays enigmatic characters, subtly confirmed she’s dating actor Christopher Abbott when her representative told People magazine on April 7th that they are expecting a child together.
Aubrey Plaza and Will Abbott had kept their relationship private, but they first met in 2019 while filming the independent movie Black Bear. In the second half of the film, a strange and suspenseful psychological thriller, they played a married couple.
When the movie was released in 2021, Plaza described it as a deeply personal and artistic project. Aubrey Plaza had been in a relationship with filmmaker Jeff Baena for ten years and had appeared in four of his films. She admitted to People magazine in 2019 that working with him could be difficult, and they both tried to maintain a healthy balance in their relationship. But in the meantime, she was working on moving forward.
In 2023, Plaza made her first appearance in a play, joining Abbott for an off-Broadway revival of John Patrick Shanley’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. The play featured the two actors as wounded characters who meet and spend a night together at a bar.
Abbott told the New York Times that he and his co-star weren’t afraid to be unconventional or a little odd. He was so impressed with the script that he immediately pictured Aubrey Plaza, with her expressive and slightly anxious eyes, as the perfect person to act alongside him.
He explained that while they perform the play for the audience every night, it’s also important for the cast to connect with each other. They aim to entertain everyone, but he specifically enjoys performing for Aubrey.
Plaza also admitted she enjoys performing for him. The New York Times described her delivery as sounding like ‘a hostage reading from a script’.
Director Jeff Ward noted that the chemistry between the two actors was immediately apparent, even during rehearsals for Black Bear. He said there wasn’t a need for them to get acquainted—they simply clicked.
And now they’re starring in a real-life romance, playing themselves.
