An almost 20-year mystery has finally received closure.
Rex Heuermann, a Long Island architect arrested in 2023 for the Gilgo Beach murders, admitted guilt to seven counts of murder in court on April 8, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
He confessed to the 1996 murder of Karen Vergata, but the terms of his plea agreement state he won’t face charges for her death. He has also agreed to help the FBI with their investigations, as reported by NBC News.
Rex Heuermann has denied guilt on charges of murdering three people in the first degree and intentionally killing four others over a period of 17 years. The remains linked to these crimes were initially found in 2010.
According to the official statement, Heuermann confessed to strangling all eight victims, many of whom were sex workers. He also admitted to dismembering some of the bodies, wrapping them in burlap, and then disposing of them. He contacted the victims using a temporary, disposable phone.
According to the Associated Press, Rex Heuermann seemed calm and straightforward during his court appearance, responding to questions from District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney about the victims who died.
He apparently avoided looking at the family members of the victims, who were seated in the courtroom gallery.

Okay, so the latest is that Rex Heuermann has pleaded guilty, and it looks like he’s facing a very long time behind bars. We’re talking life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus three more life sentences on top of that. And it doesn’t stop there – he’s also looking at four additional sentences ranging from 25 years to life. It’s a really significant development in the case, and frankly, a pretty definitive outcome.
Heuermann’s ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, who filed for divorce soon after his arrest in 2023, and their daughter, Victoria, were also present in the courtroom, according to the Associated Press.
After the court hearing, Ellerup expressed sympathy for those affected, saying, “My heart goes out to the victims and their families.” He acknowledged the profound loss they are experiencing and asked for privacy for his own family as they cope with the situation.

According to his lawyer, Michael Brown, Rex Heuermann changed his plea to avoid putting the victims’ families and his own family through a lengthy trial.
“There came a point in this defense,” Brown said, “where Rex said, ‘I want to plead guilty.’”
As a lifestyle expert, I often talk about the power of acknowledging difficult truths, and I was really struck by what the attorney said about Rex Heuermann’s plea change, as reported by NBC News. He believes it brought a significant sense of relief to Heuermann. He explained that carrying that weight – both mentally and physically – can be incredibly draining, and admitting guilt can actually be a surprisingly freeing, even cathartic, experience.
When a reporter asked if his client felt remorse, Brown said he hoped so, and expected his client would address the court at sentencing.
His sentencing hearing is currently scheduled for June 17.
