Cameron Diaz to Star in Troop Beverly Hills Sequel

Cameron Diaz is coming out of retirement for another movie! She’s joining the cast of a sequel to a popular film from the 1980s, almost 40 years after the first movie came out.

According to reports, Cameron Diaz will return for a sequel to Troop Beverly Hills, which TriStar Pictures is making. Clea DuVall, known for Happiest Season, will direct the film. Diaz will also produce the sequel with Laurence Mark (known for The Greatest Showman) and Katherine Power, her business partner from the Avaline wine company. The rest of the cast hasn’t been revealed yet.

Troop Beverly Hills Finally Gets a Sequel

Released in 1989, Troop Beverly Hills is a comedy directed by Jeff Kanew. The film stars Shelley Long as Phyllis Nefler, a Beverly Hills mom who becomes a Wilderness Girls troop leader to connect with her daughter during a divorce. Along with Long, the movie features Craig T. Nelson, Betty Thomas, Mary Gross, Carla Gugino, and Tori Spelling. The troop, led by Phyllis, must demonstrate their outdoor skills at the annual Jamboree to earn their place and avoid being shut down.

Though the movie didn’t do well in theaters – it made less than $9 million on an $18 million budget – it has since gained a dedicated following and become a beloved cult classic.

Cameron Diaz Spent a Decade Away From Acting

Cameron Diaz was a huge movie star in the 1990s, famous for films like The Mask and There’s Something About Mary. She stopped acting in 2014 to raise her family, but recently returned to star alongside Jamie Foxx in a Netflix action-comedy after more than ten years.

Diaz explained that her decision to retire in 2024 was about prioritizing her own well-being. She felt it was essential to take control of her life and focus on what she truly wanted, regardless of what others thought or offered. She simply didn’t care about external opinions or pressures, and was determined to build a life that felt right for her, as she told Fortune.

Beyond the new Troop Beverly Hills movie, actress Nia Long has several exciting projects on the way. She’ll be in Outcome, a dark comedy from Jonah Hill and Apple, releasing on April 10th, and will reprise her role as Princess Fiona in an animated sequel coming to theaters December 23rd. She’s also starring in Bad Day, an action-comedy for Netflix, and an upcoming romantic comedy for Amazon MGM Studios with Stephen Merchant.

A release date has not yet been set for the sequel to Troop Beverly Hills.
