Matthew Perry will be Selma Blair’s friend forever.
It’s been two years since Matthew passed away, and as a huge fan, it still feels so unreal. Recently, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who worked with him on Cruel Intentions, shared something really touching. She said she keeps his memory alive by holding onto special things, and she actually still has one of his shirts hanging in her closet! It’s a beautiful way to remember him, and it just shows how much he meant to those who knew him.
Selma recently shared with TopMob News’ Erin Lim Rhodes that she cherishes personal items, especially gifts from loved ones. She specifically mentioned a shirt given to her by her and her ex-husband Jason Bleick’s son, Arthur, who is fourteen years old.
The most meaningful item I own is a simple T-shirt that reads, ‘I love Arthur.’ My 53-year-old self cherishes it because Arthur made it for me when he was a child.
Selma and Matthew have known each other for a long time. The actress, known for her role in The Sweetest Thing, refers to him as her “oldest friend.”
Shortly after Matthew Perry’s passing in 2023, Selma Blair shared a heartfelt message on Instagram. She wrote that she loved him deeply, every single day, and that their love was mutual. She expressed being utterly heartbroken, and fondly wished him sweet dreams, calling him ‘Matty’.

She went on to say that he was deeply important to everyone, and he really appreciated being acknowledged and remembered for it.

You know, as Selma told it, what Matthew really cherished wasn’t just performing itself, but the connection he made with the audience. He truly loved being able to touch people through his work, and that meant everything to him.
In a 2023 interview with Extra, she explained that Matthew Perry had a natural way of connecting with people through physical touch, and considered his comedy a form of therapy. She also shared that Friends resonated with so many because it was accessible on primetime television, allowing viewers to feel a sense of family with the characters, which she found incredibly touching.

He would have been thrilled to see everyone talking about his talent, and he truly was incredibly gifted. As the Friends reunion neared, we watched the show together, and he excitedly pointed out his comedic timing – he was so proud of his work! We’d rewind scenes, analyzing them together. Our shared love of humor was a special connection between us. It was wonderful to see him rediscover his brilliance, but I also knew him in a much more complex way. I loved him deeply, but he was a complicated person and caused me a lot of pain. No one has affected my life as profoundly as Matthew Langford Perry, and I’m incredibly grateful for everything I learned from our relationship. I also want to mention Al-Anon, a vital resource for anyone who loves someone battling addiction. Matty, I’m glad you’ve finally found peace. Sincerely, Moll-o-Rama(…fication).

We are heartbroken by the loss of Matthew. He was like family to us, not just a colleague. It’s hard to find the words to express how deeply we feel this loss, so we need some time to grieve. We will share more when we’re ready. Right now, we’re sending all our love and support to Matthew’s family, friends, and everyone who cared for him.

Matthew Perry was genuinely funny – he could make me laugh uncontrollably. I’ll never forget his private, witty observations about the craziness of show business and the silliness of men trying to appear confident, especially when we both realized we were adults wearing makeup for our jobs. When he was sober, Matt was incredibly kind-hearted and brilliantly imaginative. I believe his most wonderful qualities also made him especially susceptible to the lifelong struggle he faced. His fight was incredibly brave, and it deserves recognition that doesn’t exist yet. He was full of contrasts – hilariously self-deprecating yet surprisingly confident, a source of immense joy who also battled with darkness, both blessed and burdened. I want his family to know he was a kind person, not just to those he worked with, but to everyone. To honor his memory, I hope we can continue his important work: reaching out to those who struggle with similar vulnerabilities, encouraging them to seek help, and offering them the love and support they deserve. I’m so thankful I had the chance to work with him, to share time with him, and, most importantly, to call him my friend.

I’m incredibly grateful I got to be part of that reunion show with six amazing people. It was beautiful to see how close they all are. Getting to spend time with Matthew was a dream – he was so kind, thoughtful, and hilarious.

Gwyneth Paltrow shared a heartfelt memory of meeting Matthew Perry in 1993 at the Williamstown Theater Festival. They spent the summer together performing in plays, and she described him as funny, kind, and a joy to be around. They enjoyed simple pleasures like swimming, grabbing drinks at a local bar, and a memorable kiss in a grassy field. It was a special time, right before the first episode of Friends aired, and Matthew was understandably anxious about whether the show would be a success – which, of course, it was. They remained friends for a period before losing touch, but Paltrow always cherished their encounters. She expressed deep sadness at his passing, hoping he has finally found peace.

During her concert in Las Vegas on October 28th, shortly after learning of Matthew Perry’s death, Adele stopped the show to share a touching memory. She was particularly touched last year when Matthew mentioned on his Instagram stories how much he enjoyed their film ‘Fools Rush In,’ and that he considered it his favorite movie they’d made together.
She continued, saying that over the years, she and Matthew often fondly remembered that special time in their lives. She shared that her friend was taken too soon, but she would always treasure his playful spirit, determination, and kind heart. She bid him a final farewell, promising they would never forget him.

She shared on Instagram that Matt always had a unique sense of humor. They went on a Valentine’s Day date, and although Matt couldn’t get a reservation at a Malibu restaurant, her dad managed to secure one for him. He spent most of the night joking about how her dad’s charm had gotten them the table. They had been friends for a very long time – truly a lifetime. She knows many people are heartbroken, especially their close group of friends, and he will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. She admitted she wasn’t able to find the right words, as she was still in shock and overwhelmed with sadness.

As many of you know, I played Chandler Bing’s mom on Friends, and I’m just absolutely devastated to hear about Matthew Perry’s passing. It’s such a shock to lose someone so talented and full of life. My heart goes out to his friends, family, and especially his dad, John Bennett Perry, with whom I shared some wonderful times working on shows like Flamingo Road and Falcon Crest. He’s a lovely man, and I’m sending him all my love during this incredibly difficult time.

I highly recommend reading his book – it was his way of giving back and helping others. But knowing him, I don’t think he’ll rest peacefully – he’s probably already cracking jokes and making everyone laugh in heaven!”
