Action Movies Now on Prime Video That Keep You Hooked

With so many movies now available through streaming services, Prime Video is quickly becoming a top choice, especially for fans of action and thrillers. It offers a great mix of classic films and newer releases, and some truly stand out as the best the genre has to offer.

Action movies rarely try to be overly serious, and often do well when combined with other genres like science fiction or war stories. When they’re great, they give us inspiring heroes, fun social observations, and villains we enjoy rooting against. Luckily, Prime Video has a wide selection of action films, so there’s something for everyone.

Broken Arrow is an Unsung 1990s Masterpiece

The story follows Major Vic Deakins and Captain Riley Hale, two stealth bomber pilots in the American Air Force. During a training exercise with live nuclear weapons, Deak unexpectedly tries to kill Hale and disables the plane, forcing them both to eject. Now, with nuclear weapons scattered in the Utah desert, Hale races against time – and a rogue Deakins along with his mercenary team – to recover them before they fall into the wrong hands.

Okay, so as a total ’90s movie fan, I’ve always thought Broken Arrow is the ultimate fun, over-the-top action flick. John Travolta’s character, Deak, really keeps things from getting too serious, which is perfect. It’s honestly almost as much a cool desert adventure movie as it is a straight-up action film. It totally feels like one of John Woo’s other awesome movies, like Face/Off. It’s maybe faded a little since it came out in ’96, but I think it’s seriously ripe for a new generation to discover and enjoy.

Escape From New York Redefined Dystopic Action

Escape From New York is about Snake Plissken, a tough mercenary living in a future where Manhattan Island has become a massive prison. When the President of the United States is kidnapped, Snake is strong-armed into going into the city to rescue him before an important peace conference. He has to fight his way through countless criminals to complete the dangerous mission.

John Carpenter’s Escape From New York perfectly captured a formula we see a lot today – the action movie featuring a team sent on a nearly impossible mission. The film is a standout in Kurt Russell’s career, largely thanks to his portrayal of Snake Plissken, a tough and stoic hero who helped the movie become a timeless classic.

The Tomorrow War Gave Prime Video an Original Blockbuster

In 2022, Prime Video released a thrilling movie that stepped up its game in the streaming landscape. The story begins with soldiers arriving from the future to fight off an alien invasion, and centers around Dan Forester, a science teacher who is unexpectedly recruited to join the battle. He’s sent to the future to help locate a crucial biological weapon that could turn the tide against the invaders.

Prime Video’s film The Tomorrow War was a big swing for the streaming service, aiming for the same exciting feel as Edge of Tomorrow. Once Chris Pratt’s character travels to the future, the intense alien battles and ruined world are immediately captivating. While many studios have struggled with sci-fi action recently, The Tomorrow War successfully delivers the goods.

Civil War Becomes More Relevant Every Day

Alex Garland, a highly successful screenwriter of the 21st century, created a film many consider a standout work. The story follows a group of journalists traveling across a war-torn America amidst a national crisis. As rumors of a presidential coup spread, they attempt to reach the White House, documenting the fractured state of the country along the way.

Many people find Civil War to be a disturbing but increasingly relevant film, reflecting the deep divisions within American society. It can be seen as a warning about internal conflict, a thought-provoking look at the futility of war, or simply a compelling action movie – it’s a film everyone should see at least once.

Sisu is an Unrelenting World War II Revenge Movie

This film takes viewers back to Finland during World War II, following Aatami Korpi, a gold prospector who unexpectedly hits the jackpot. His newfound wealth quickly attracts unwanted attention in the form of a Nazi unit who terrorize him, kill his livestock, and try to take his life. A hardened veteran, Aatami is consumed by a desire for revenge and responds with fierce, violent attacks against the invading soldiers.

Sisu blends the brutal reality of war with the intense survival story of films like The Revenant, creating a protagonist who is incredibly resilient and won’t give up, no matter what the Nazis do. With growing interest in anti-fascist stories, it delivers a satisfying revenge tale for audiences eager to see the villains defeated.

The Beekeeper is the Quintessential Jason Statham Movie

Following twenty years of starring in exciting, visually-driven action films, Jason Statham teamed up with director David Ayer for The Beekeeper. This movie captures what makes his best work so effective. Statham plays Adam Clay, a former top-level assassin known as a “beekeeper,” who seeks revenge after a generous woman is victimized by a large-scale financial fraud. When he discovers the scam reaches the highest levels of power – even the President of the United States – Clay launches a solo campaign against those responsible.

The Beekeeper combines familiar action elements with a timely story about distrust of institutions. It’s a straightforward conspiracy thriller – perfect for fans of martial arts, revenge plots, and those who enjoy stories reflecting current anxieties about online scams and political resentment. If you’re a Prime subscriber looking for an easy-to-enjoy action movie, this one fits the bill.

The 13th Warrior Was Made For Conan the Barbarian Fans

Following the hits Die Hard and Predator, director John McTiernan shifted gears with The 13th Warrior. The film tells a story inspired by the travels of Ahmad ibn Fadlan, a Muslim traveler who joins a group of Vikings on a dangerous mission. They travel north to help King Hrothgar fight against the Wendel, a terrifying tribe of cannibalistic warriors.

Inspired by Michael Crichton’s novel Eaters of the Dead, this movie is a raw and action-packed historical adventure, appealing to fans of films like Conan the Barbarian. It reimagines the story of Beowulf as a realistic medieval battle, delivering a fast-paced, dark, and violent fantasy experience.

Nobody is the Perfect John Wick Imitator

Following the popularity of John Wick, many studios tried to create similar action films. This one centers on Hutch, a former hitman now living a dull, suburban life. When a break-in at his home makes his family lose faith in him, he’s drawn into a conflict with the Russian mafia. This reawakens his skills as a deadly assassin, and he responds with brutal force.

If you enjoyed John Wick, you’ll likely love Nobody. It’s packed with thrilling action scenes and is easily one of the best action movies you can find on Prime Video. The film follows a seemingly ordinary man who rediscovers his skills and fights back against dangerous criminals, all while trying to earn back his family’s admiration. Nobody is a rare gem that successfully blends humor, cool visuals, and intense action, making it a standout action film of the 2020s.

The Terminator Crafted the Sci-Fi Action Genre

In James Cameron’s The Terminator, a deadly robot is sent from a bleak future to the 1980s with a mission to kill Sarah Connor, the mother of a future leader of the human resistance. To prevent this and save humanity, a soldier named Kyle Reese travels back in time to protect her. Despite their efforts, they struggle to stop the relentless killing machine.

When The Terminator came out, it was a groundbreaking film that uniquely blended science fiction and action. While Arnold Schwarzenegger played the antagonist, the movie functions more like a classic horror film with a terrifying, unstoppable villain. It’s a must-see for fans of films like RoboCop and a key starting point for a whole wave of similar movies.

Die Hard is the Ultimate One-Man Army Action Movie

Bruce Willis and director John McTiernan essentially created the modern action hero with the 1988 film Die Hard. The movie starts with Willis playing John McClane, a regular New York police officer, who travels to Los Angeles to visit his wife. It quickly becomes a tense and violent hostage situation. McClane is the only one standing between a group of criminals and their target, and he uses his police skills to take them down one by one.

McTiernan’s Die Hard is a classic for a reason: it has a straightforward plot, incredibly well-written dialogue, and keeps you engaged from beginning to end. Plus, Alan Rickman’s performance as Hans Gruber is iconic. The film instantly made Bruce Willis an action star and remains a perfect survival thriller after nearly forty years. You can currently watch it on Prime Video.
