Get ready for some laughs on Paramount+ this April! The streaming service is adding a fantastic, but often overlooked, comedy classic from the 1980s to its lineup. The ’80s were a great time for comedies, with popular movies focusing on teens like The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, as well as clever, imaginative films like Back to the Future and Ghostbusters. While many of these movies are still well-known today, this particular ’80s comedy deserves more recognition as a hidden gem.
The comedy film Top Secret! began streaming on Paramount+ on April 1st. Made by the creators of Airplane! and The Naked Gun—Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker (known as ZAZ)—it’s a hilarious spoof of Elvis movies and Cold War spy stories. Val Kilmer stars as Nick Rivers, a popular American rock singer who gets caught up in a wild and complicated plot while performing at a festival in East Germany. He ends up trying to help rescue a scientist who’s been imprisoned.
Top Secret! Is a Laugh-A-Minute Cult Classic
Get ready to laugh non-stop with Top Secret! This movie is famous for having an incredibly high hit rate with its jokes – it’s packed with gags in almost every scene. Even after multiple viewings, the jokes still land, and there’s something in it for everyone. From visual humor and puns to clever wordplay and bizarre situations – like a bookstore where everything is backwards – Top Secret! truly masters the art of rapid-fire comedy, creating scenes that are now considered all-time classics.
As a huge comedy fan, I’ve always loved how Val Kilmer just commits to the sheer silliness of Top Secret!. His deadpan delivery is perfect, especially considering how over-the-top everything is. And it’s not just the lines – he absolutely nails the Elvis-inspired musical numbers like “Skeet Surfing” and throws himself into the physical comedy, like that incredible underwater bar fight. What really makes the movie work, though, is that everyone – Peter Cushing, Omar Sharif, Michael Gough, the whole cast – is equally committed to the ridiculousness. It’s no surprise it earned a solid 77% on Rotten Tomatoes and, in my opinion, deserves to be recognized as a truly great, if often overlooked, comedy.
Other Comedy Movies Now on Paramount+
Paramount+ isn’t just adding Top Secret! – they’ve been busy all month with new releases, especially comedies! So far this month, they’ve added favorites like Airplane!, Airplane! II, Catch Me If You Can, Cheech & Chong’s Still Smokin’, I Love You, Man, The Truman Show, Wayne’s World, and Wayne’s World 2. And on April 20th, Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie will become available to stream exclusively on Paramount+.
