Things aren’t falling apart, but the person who came up with Sony’s new Playerbase competition might be reconsidering it after today.
As announced on the PlayStation Blog yesterday, the plan is to honor the PlayStation community by featuring players in games, beginning with Gran Turismo 7.
To start, only one person will be selected, and you’ll need to succeed in a video interview to be considered. The PlayStation Blog says this interview is to get to know you and your passion for PlayStation, but it seems more like they’re holding auditions without paying anyone.
We surveyed 1,000 PlayStation 5 fans and found that a large majority – 62% – weren’t interested in this. Another 27% expressed concerns about security.
The rules are unclear, but it seems like you’d be allowing Sony to use your image and information, which isn’t great considering how AI technology is developing.
Since most of our visitors are passionate PlayStation fans, we were surprised to find that nearly 90% aren’t interested in a program meant to celebrate them. It seems like a big opportunity was missed.
The comments on the PS Blog have been even more forgiving.
One user said: “Nobody asked for this. Bet this won’t last long either. Make games.”
Someone else commented that it seems like you’re losing touch with what’s real and with the people who support you, and questioned who would even want that. They also expressed concern that this content might be used to train artificial intelligence, and used strong language to convey that concern.
We expect the contest will still receive many entries and proceed as scheduled. We truly hope the winner enjoys the experience.
But this whole initiative seems like it could do with a rethink to us.
