Good fantasy shows often use surprising plot twists, but it’s hard to truly shock viewers these days—especially when shows hint at what’s coming or are based on already known stories. Series adapted from popular books, like The Wheel of Time or Game of Thrones, might surprise people who aren’t familiar with the source material, but fans of the books usually see the twists coming. (Let’s be honest, after Ned Stark died in Game of Thrones, was the Red Wedding really a surprise?)
Even when shows don’t follow a specific plan, their plot twists can often feel obvious. For example, many viewers correctly predicted the reveal of Sauron in The Rings of Power, and Supernatural fans figured out Chuck’s true identity as God well before the show confirmed it. Creating a truly surprising twist is difficult, but some fantasy series succeed in doing just that.
5) The Good Place Is Actually The Bad Place

For fans of The Good Place, Eleanor Shellstrop’s realization that “This is the Bad Place!” is instantly recognizable. But the twist was truly shocking when it first aired. The show initially built tension around the idea that Eleanor didn’t belong in the Good Place. No one anticipated the Season 1 finale would reveal an even bigger surprise: that they were all in the Bad Place, orchestrated by Michael. Looking back, it makes perfect sense, but at the time, it was a stunning cliffhanger and remains one of the most memorable twists in television history.
4) Joyce Summers’ Death in Buffy the Vampire Slayer

The show Buffy the Vampire Slayer was known for its surprising plot twists, but the death of Buffy’s mother, Joyce, was particularly heartbreaking and realistically portrayed the shock of grief. What made Joyce’s death so impactful was that it wasn’t caused by the typical supernatural threats in the series. She died from a brain aneurysm, demonstrating that even in a fantastical world, some problems are simply unavoidable. This was a new kind of challenge for Buffy and the audience to face, and it was a powerfully memorable moment.
3) The Upside Down Is a Bridge in Stranger Things

The way this particular plot point was handled felt a little weak, but it’s safe to say that no one watching the fifth season of Stranger Things thought the Upside Down was just a pathway to the true evil dimension, rather than the alternate dimension itself. For four seasons, the show led us to believe the Upside Down was a separate, parallel world where creatures like the Demogorgon came from, and we all accepted that. While fans anticipated some kind of surprise regarding the nature of the mysterious location, this reveal wasn’t what most people predicted.
2) Alina Has Shadow Powers in Shadow and Bone Season 2

A common trick for surprising viewers is to change the story from the original source material, but this can be risky. The second season of Shadow and Bone tried this by altering Alina’s story in the finale. In the books, Alina loses her powers and retires with Mal after defeating the Darkling. However, the show combined elements from the last two books, made Alina queen to Nikolai, and sent Mal away on a voyage. The biggest shock came at the very end when Alina unexpectedly used shadow powers, similar to the Darkling – something that didn’t happen in the books. While this change could have led to a compelling storyline, the series was unfortunately canceled before viewers could find out what happened next.
1) The True Meaning of Hodor in Game of Thrones

For the first four seasons, the HBO series Game of Thrones closely followed the books it was based on, leaving fans who had read A Song of Ice and Fire unsurprised. But after the show moved beyond the source material, it began to shock viewers with unexpected twists. One of the most memorable was the heartbreaking story behind the character Hodor’s name and limited speech, revealed in Season 6’s episode, “The Door.” The episode showed how Bran Stark was unknowingly responsible for Hodor’s condition, connecting his past to his tragic fate in a powerfully moving way. It was a truly unforgettable twist, and, unlike some later moments in the series, it felt earned and impactful.
