Andy Weir is building on the world of his novel, Project Hail Mary, with a new story. This news follows the recent release of the book’s movie adaptation, starring Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace. The film has been a critical and commercial hit, earning positive reviews for its story, humor, and acting, and has already made around $430 million worldwide.
Mixed-reality video game Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars has been announced
Andy Weir, the author of the book that inspired the game, has revealed Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, a new mixed-reality video game. It’s designed to be a deeply immersive experience and is scheduled to release on popular VR and mixed reality platforms such as Meta Quest and PICO in late 2026.
In the announcement video, Weir described the mixed reality game as “the first way to experience something beyond the events of the book.”
Along with the news, a new poster featuring Rocky, the alien companion of the main character Ryland Grace from the book and movie, was revealed, giving fans a first glimpse at the game.
In the footage, you can see actor Alan Weir, along with the film’s directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, watching a demonstration of the game. They were all thrilled with how users could explore the ship and interact with the character Rocky. Lord and Weir also chatted about their plans for when they got a chance to play it themselves.
Lord jokingly said he’d try to get Rocky to mess up a simple thumbs-up, referencing a famous scene from the film. Weir, on the other hand, explained he’d start by testing out all the ways players can interact with the popular character.
In Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, players will experience the story as Ryland Grace, who faces a major crisis during his space mission.
Players must repair the failing systems on Grace’s ship, and they’ll need to find a solution to do so. Luckily, they won’t be working alone – Rocky will assist them, creating a chance to build a strong, trusting relationship through teamwork.
