Dacre Montgomery revealed that there were originally plans for three sequels to the 2017 film Power Rangers. However, those plans were canceled when the studio decided to reboot the series. In a recent interview, Montgomery discussed why the movie didn’t lead to a franchise and shared his ideas about the future of the Power Rangers universe.
Dacre Montgomery on how new Power Rangers reboot scrapped 3 sequels
As a big movie fan, I was really disappointed to hear that ‘Project Almanac’ wasn’t getting any sequels. The star of ‘Stranger Things’ let slip that the film just didn’t make enough money, and then, to make things worse, the studio that owned it went through a change in ownership. That pretty much sealed the deal – no more ‘Project Almanac’ movies, unfortunately.
I recently read an interview with Dacre Montgomery where he talked about the Power Rangers movie. Apparently, they signed on for four films with Lionsgate initially! He said the studio first wanted to build a franchise similar to The Hunger Games, but they eventually decided to go in a completely different direction and just reboot the whole thing.
It had the potential to be something really significant, but ultimately, it didn’t perform well enough financially to justify continuing the project. Apparently, they’re planning a reboot, and I think the rights to the show have been sold, which is exciting. Power Rangers is important to so many people, and I’m confident whoever takes it on next will do a fantastic job. I really enjoyed my time working on it.”
The 2017 Power Rangers movie boasted a well-known cast, including Naomi Scott, Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston, Bill Hader, and Montgomery. However, it didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $142 million worldwide despite costing around $120 million to make, according to MovieWeb.
In 2018, Saban Entertainment sold the Power Rangers franchise to Hasbro, leading to a fresh start for the series. Currently, the team behind the Percy Jackson and the Olympians show—Dan Shotz and Jonathan E. Steinberg—are developing a new Power Rangers series for Disney+. As of now, there haven’t been any announcements about who will star in the show or when it will be released.
