Tearful Dax Shepard Details Kristen Bell’s Support During Dad’s Death

Dax Shepard is forever grateful for this kindness. 

Dax Shepard recently shared a story about how his wife, Kristen Bell, supported him during a difficult time. In 2012, when his father, Dave Shepard, was in the hospital and receiving many visitors, Shepard felt overwhelmed. Bell stepped in and physically helped him manage the situation.

Dax remembered that his father’s room was constantly filled with visitors, all meaning well, but it became difficult for him. He found himself comforting them instead of having private time with his dad, and he started to feel overwhelmed and resentful about it, he told Anderson Cooper in an interview shared on CNN’s TikTok on April 8.

He went outside to his car and called Kristen, needing to talk about what was bothering him. What happened on that call, Dax said, was something he couldn’t believe.

Dax remembered getting upset, then his wife calmly told him, ‘It’s okay, I’m here. Look to the left.’ He was in Detroit at the time, while she was back home in California, and when he turned, there she was, seven months pregnant.

He went on to explain that she had traveled to be with him, realized he was having a difficult time, and managed to find the hospital he was at—all without letting him know she was coming. She was waiting by the car when he found out.

Through tears, he added, “What a champ, you know?”

He and Kristen then visited Dax’s father, who got to feel Kristen’s baby bump. Kristen, known for her role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, was pregnant with their first daughter, Lincoln, at the time. A year later, they welcomed their second daughter, Delta.

After Dax shared his story, Anderson read a blog post Dax had written in 2013. The post described his father’s battle with cancer and a thoughtful gift he received from Kristen.

Oh my god, it was the sweetest thing ever. Dad was just beaming, totally lost for words, but you could feel how happy he was to know his granddaughter was on the way. He knew he wouldn’t be here for the birth, and that broke my heart, but he got to feel her, you know? It was like he was already meeting her. Honestly, it was such an emotional, amazing moment, and I’ll cherish it forever. I can still see his face… it was just pure joy.

He jokingly said that even if he lived for a thousand years, he’d always owe his wife a debt of gratitude for one special moment they shared.

And though Dax was almost overcome with emotion, he managed to quip, “She’s a gangster, y’all.”

Kristen and Dax recently celebrated their son Lincoln’s twelfth birthday. In a heartfelt post, Kristen shared how becoming parents at that time changed their family for the better.

In a heartfelt message posted on March 27th, she shared that family is truly the most important thing in life. She also added a simple but powerful reminder: never underestimate the comfort of holding someone’s hand.

Dax remembers being immediately struck by Kristen when he met her at a birthday party in 2007, thinking she seemed to sparkle. They met again by chance at a hockey game a couple of weeks later, and decided it was meant to be, beginning their relationship.

As the saying goes, opposites attract, and that certainly seems to be the case for this couple. Dax admitted he used to be a bit of a playboy, which initially gave Kristen pause. She told Good Housekeeping they were like the classic Paula Abdul song ‘Opposites Attract’ – a perfect example of two very different people falling in love.

They became engaged in late 2009 while filming When In Rome. Surrounded by the romantic atmosphere of Italy, they found a real-life connection mirroring the storyline of their movie.

Kristen once said in an interview about her relationship with Dax, “A good cuddle can really solve any problem—it’s completely true!”

In 2013, the couple married in a low-key ceremony at a Beverly Hills courthouse, following an earlier announcement of their plans on Twitter. Fans found their decision to skip a large, elaborate wedding particularly endearing, adding to the romantic appeal of their relationship.

Kristen Bell and her husband welcomed their daughter, Lincoln, in March 2013. She’s very protective of Lincoln’s privacy and jokingly warned anyone who tried to photograph her daughter that they’d face her wrath.

In December 2014 the couple had their second daughter, Delta.

In a 2015 interview with Good Housekeeping, Kristen Bell revealed that she and her husband go to couples counseling when they face challenges. She emphasized that there’s no shame in seeking therapy, stating, “Therapy is not something to be embarrassed about.”

The two looked just as in love as ever at the premiere of Dax’s new movie Chips in March 2017.
