Severance favourite Adam Scott stars in “disturbing” and “nightmarish” first look at new horror film

It’s been more than a year since the popular second season of Severance finished, and while fans are still waiting for season three of the Apple TV+ show, star Adam Scott has a new project arriving soon.

Damian McCarthy, the Irish filmmaker behind the intriguing movie Oddity, has released a new trailer for his latest horror film, Hokum. The movie is scheduled for release in the UK in early May.

The short, unsettling preview opens with Ohm Bauman, an American writer played by Scott, visibly frightened and holding onto a lamp in a small, dark room. It then cuts to a scene of him driving to a hotel in the Irish countryside, accompanied by a mysterious voice speaking in the background.

“Fadó Fadó, long long ago,” the voice says. “Deep in the woods, there lived…”

Just as this thought is forming, the scene changes to Ohm cautioning two kids about talking to people they don’t know. The stranger overhears and replies with a chilling statement: “There are far more dangerous people than strangers around here, kid.”

Ohm later requests a room at the opposite end of the building from this man. He explains that this is his first time visiting Ireland, and his trip is a personal one: he’s returning to scatter the ashes of his parents, who honeymooned there years ago.

As a movie fan, I have to say this trailer really got under my skin! From the start, you get this unsettling feeling that something’s seriously off about this hotel. We’re shown quick flashes of really strange and creepy things happening, and then they bring back that initial line from the beginning, but this time with a chilling twist at the end.

The voice began, “Long, long ago, hidden deep within the woods, lived an old woman… a witch.”

The new film, releasing on May 1st, follows a writer named Ohm Bauman who travels to a secluded Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes. He becomes increasingly captivated by stories the staff tell about a ghost – an ancient witch said to haunt one of the rooms.

Troubling visions and a sudden disappearance quickly pull him into a terrifying struggle with the most painful parts of his history.

The film Hokum premiered at the South by Southwest Festival last month and received very positive reactions, particularly for how it incorporated Irish folklore. It appears to be a promising new release for horror enthusiasts!

Hokum is released in UK cinemas on 1 May 2026.
