As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited about the upcoming Highlander reboot. Knowing it’s being directed by Chad Stahelski, the guy behind John Wick, immediately got my attention. And the cast? Seriously impressive – Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista… it’s packed with talent! It feels like a safe bet that we’re going to get a seriously action-packed film. Djimon Hounsou, who’s involved, has hinted that one of the things fans love most about the original Highlander will be a big part of this new version, which is great to hear.
While promoting his new film Thrash, releasing on Netflix April 10th, Djimon Hounsou spoke with ComicBook about the upcoming Highlander reboot and why fans of the 1986 original should be optimistic. He confidently stated, “They’re gonna love this movie,” highlighting the large-scale action sequences directed by Chad Stahelski, known for the John Wick films, and the impressive cast. Hounsou also praised the set design, particularly his own, and teased that the movie will feature “a lot” of decapitations, promising a spectacular experience.
Can Highlander Become the Next John Wick?
Chad Stahelski has become a leading action director thanks to his work on the John Wick films. His experience as a stunt performer gives him a unique ability to create exciting and carefully planned action sequences that showcase the dedication of everyone involved. John Wick redefined the action genre with its signature style, and now Stahelski hopes to achieve the same impact with his upcoming Highlander project.
Whether the final Highlander film will be a success remains to be seen, but comments from Djimon Hounsou are promising. What made John Wick special wasn’t just the action, but its striking and creative visuals. The John Wick films are known for their excellent production design, and it sounds like that same quality is being brought to Highlander. Of course, Highlander differs from John Wick because its hero, Connor MacLeod, is an immortal warrior who has lived for centuries. While the film is primarily set today, we might see flashbacks to different times and places, showing Connor’s long life.
As a long-time fan, I’m thrilled to hear the new Highlander film will really lean into the iconic head-taking! The previous movies were known for it, and it just wouldn’t feel like Highlander without plenty of dramatic beheadings. I’m especially excited to see how director Chad Stahelski handles the action. His work on John Wick is incredible – the gun-fu is so smooth and visually stunning. Knowing his style, I can only imagine how amazing the sword fights will be. Wick took out a lot of bad guys with bullets, and it sounds like Conor, played by Henry Cavill, will be doing the same… but with a sword!
I’m really excited about Highlander coming out now, especially considering where things stand with John Wick. The Ballerina spinoff didn’t quite land with audiences, and while Donnie Yen is working on a Caine-focused project, the future of that series feels uncertain. We heard about a John Wick 5 a while ago, but Chad Stahelski has said it’s only going to happen if they find the perfect story. It seems like Highlander is stepping in to fill that action-packed void, and it’s fantastic to see Stahelski tackling another movie with such a cool and detailed world. If Highlander does well, I have a feeling we’ll see him build out that universe even more, which I’d absolutely love!
