Get ready for a live-action Metal Gear Solid movie! Sony Pictures has confirmed they’re starting development on a film based on the popular video game. The movie will be directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who previously worked on Final Destination: Bloodlines, as part of a new agreement with Sony.
“Metal Gear Solid” was a truly innovative game that changed video games forever. Lipovsky and Stein stated they were excited and proud to recreate Hideo Kojima’s famous characters and world.
Following the success of their recent film, Final Destination: Bloodlines, Lipovsky and Stein are gaining recognition. Released in May 2025, Final Destination: Bloodlines was the first new movie in the horror series in over a decade. It proved to be a major hit, earning $317 million worldwide on a $50 million budget and becoming one of the most popular and critically acclaimed films in the franchise.
This news follows recent layoffs at Sony Pictures Entertainment. The company is restructuring its business to prioritize established franchises and expand its intellectual property, particularly by creating content based on its video games.
Metal Gear Solid Is Finally Getting a Movie
Metal Gear Solid is the latest version of the Metal Gear video game series. These games combine science fiction and military spy themes, putting players in control of Solid Snake, an elite soldier and spy. He’s usually sent on missions to sneak into complex locations filled with terrorists and stop them from using Metal Gear – a powerful weapon that’s central to the story.
The latest game in the Metal Gear series, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (released in 2015), features a story that doesn’t follow a straight path. Because the Metal Gear storyline has become so intricate and detailed, it might be difficult to turn into a movie that appeals to a wide audience.
Hideo Kojima, the creator of the series, first mentioned the possibility of a film adaptation back in 2006. After that, people began to guess who might direct and star in it, but there wasn’t any official news until 2012. That year, on the 25th anniversary of the Metal Gear franchise, Kojima revealed that Arad Productions would be making the movie for Sony’s Columbia Pictures.
In 2024, Avi Arad, a co-owner of Arad Productions, mentioned they were still refining the script but couldn’t share details yet. He added that he believes audiences will be very pleased and taken by surprise.
