When Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, they decided to rebrand the existing collection of stories and comics—known as the Expanded Universe—as “Star Wars Legends.” This effectively removed those stories from the official Star Wars timeline. While a fresh start for the franchise made sense, many fans were disappointed because they enjoyed the characters and stories from the Expanded Universe. Since then, Lucasfilm has occasionally borrowed elements from Legends, bringing some characters into the new official timeline – Grand Admiral Thrawn is a prime example. However, fans are eager to see other beloved characters return, and they’ve become particularly frustrated with Lucasfilm’s reluctance to revisit one character in particular.
At a recent panel at MegaCon, authors Claudia Gray and Timothy Zahn shared that their ideas for bringing the character Mara Jade into official Star Wars continuity were turned down. Gray recounted being surprised by the decision, saying she repeatedly asked if it was possible, only to be firmly told no. The news has sparked discussion among Star Wars fans, many of whom believe Mara Jade could improve existing storylines, such as those in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, even if her introduction required some changes from her original Expanded Universe portrayal.
Perhaps the creators have future plans for the character in movies or TV shows and want to keep their options open. I’d love to see a storyline where MJ escapes the attack on Luke’s school with their son and they go into hiding.

I’ve always found Disney’s hesitation to include Mara Jade strange. She’s a really popular character with fans. It might be too late now, but they could introduce her as Luke Skywalker’s daughter.

I think it would be great to officially include this character in the story. It would be really interesting to see her interact with Luke Skywalker, perhaps mirroring his own journey, but with a darker outcome – either he accidentally causes her death or isn’t able to redeem her. This could also help us understand why Luke acted the way he did in The Last Jedi.

They’re likely holding her back from appearing in a book or comic because they plan to feature her in a TV show or movie down the line, and introducing her in print first might make that harder.

I don’t mind if they never explore a romantic relationship for her. Introducing that into her established story would fundamentally alter who she is, essentially creating a different character. There’s already a wealth of existing material about her, so Disney should concentrate on developing new, original characters instead.

I’m wondering why that happened. Perhaps they simply didn’t want Luke to be married, wanting him to follow the Jedi path of avoiding attachments. I’m not sure what the reason is, though.

It’s interesting to consider how The Last Jedi might be viewed differently in hindsight. The film doesn’t really explain why Luke exiled himself to that island, especially considering Kylo Ren killed Mara Jade Skywalker – a significant loss that could have motivated his seclusion.

I really don’t understand how they could make her a key advisor to the emperor, especially with the Inquisitors already established – she wasn’t one of them. And if they show her developing a romantic relationship with Luke, it can’t end with them being together.

I understand why this character doesn’t quite fit into the Star Wars story. She doesn’t work during the Empire era because the Inquisitors already fill that role, and she’s not suitable for the post-Return of the Jedi timeline because the Emperor’s presence isn’t strong enough compared to the old Legends continuity. It might be best to simply leave her out.

It’s surprising considering Disney previously sold her lightsaber! They could still use her character’s design and name, simply adjusting her backstory to fit the current Star Wars timeline.

Can Mara Jade Ever Become Part of Star Wars Canon?
Because Gray and Zahn haven’t explained why their ideas for Mara Jade were turned down, fans have been speculating about Disney’s reasons. Some hopeful fans believe this means Lucasfilm plans to introduce Mara Jade in a future film or series, making that her official debut. By not currently featuring her in books or comics, Lucasfilm would have complete creative freedom over her introduction and wouldn’t be limited to a specific point in the Star Wars timeline – they could bring her in at any time they choose.
Although the idea is appealing, it’s unlikely Mara Jade will become part of the official Star Wars story. The main problem is her established history with Luke Skywalker. In the older stories, they married and had a child. Given how Luke’s story has unfolded in the current official timeline, adding such a significant relationship would require changing previously established events. The fact that Mara Jade hasn’t been mentioned at all suggests that Luke’s adventures after Return of the Jedi happened without her being in his life.
As a big Star Wars fan, I’ve been thinking about Mara Jade and whether she’ll ever officially become part of the main story. While Lucasfilm could bring her in, keeping her personality similar to the old Legends version but just dropping her connection with Luke Skywalker, I honestly don’t think that’s the best approach. Her relationship with Luke is so central to who she is and her story that if they didn’t explore that, it would feel like a missed opportunity. I think they’d be better off creating a new character who’s inspired by Mara Jade – someone who has some of those same qualities, but without all the expectations and history that come with the Legends version. Honestly, it would be a real letdown if they brought Mara Jade into canon and she never interacted with Luke. It just wouldn’t feel right.
Bringing Grand Admiral Thrawn into the current Star Wars story felt natural, even though this version isn’t exactly the same as the character from older stories. Fans appreciated seeing a familiar character reintroduced in a way that honored his roots. It will be more challenging to do the same with Mara Jade, especially considering Luke Skywalker’s established role and the presence of the Inquisitors, which diminishes the need for a character like the Emperor’s Hand. However, fans are still hoping Mara Jade will eventually appear in official Star Wars canon, and some believe Amy Adams may be portraying a version of her in Star Wars: Starfighter.
