With Sentry’s debut in Thunderbolts, it’s clear the MCU has its version of Superman – though this one is much more troubled than the traditional hero. Actually, the MCU might have two, as Captain Marvel also shares similarities with Superman. Or perhaps she’s more like Wonder Woman? Namor is a bit like Aquaman, we’ve seen a few characters briefly fill the role of The Flash, and Doctor Strange, with his magic and ring, could be seen as a version of Green Lantern if you look at it a certain way. That’s a pretty good start to a Marvel version of the Justice League, but one key hero is still missing.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t really have a Batman… but who comes closest? Some argue Tony Stark, with his high-tech armor and vast wealth, fits the Bruce Wayne mold. However, Iron Man was a public figure, while Batman operated in secret, fueled by revenge and a complex sense of justice. Moon Knight is a possibility, but he’s a unique character. Clint Barton’s time as Ronin briefly resembled Batman, but it was short-lived. Now, with the Daredevil: Born Again series, it’s clear: Matt Murdock is the MCU’s version of the Dark Knight.
The MCU Just Crowned Daredevil its Batman Replacement

I was really struck by a moment in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, episode 4. Swordsman – Tony Dalton, who’s fantastic – basically lays it out for Daredevil: he’s become something bigger than himself. He’s not just a guy fighting crime; he’s a symbol of hope for New York City. It hit me hard when Swordsman pointed out that Daredevil is now the face of the resistance against Kingpin, a rallying cry for everyone fighting back against the corruption. When Matt asks for help, Swordsman is genuinely surprised, telling him he doesn’t even realize he’s not just a hero anymore – he is hope for the whole city. It’s a powerful scene, and it really solidifies Daredevil as the closest thing the MCU has to a Batman – a figure people can look up to.
Usually, when we think of a hopeful superhero, Superman comes to mind, not Batman. However, Daredevil’s grounded, street-level approach connects him more to Batman. While Daredevil has religious undertones, he’s not portrayed as a savior, and his judgment is often clouded by his feelings. The death of his best friend, Foggy, is a deeply traumatic event for him, similar to Bruce Wayne’s experience. Furthermore, Daredevil seems to be the main hero representing New York in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even more so than Spider-Man, which creates a strong connection between him and the city, much like Batman’s relationship with Gotham.
Adding to the complexity, Murdock reveals a surprising similarity to Batman – a connection neither hero acknowledges. For decades, Bruce Wayne has been criticized for involving young, often inexperienced, partners in dangerous situations. Daredevil seems to be following this pattern in Season 2 of Born Again. He willingly lets Angela Del Toro, the daughter of the late White Tiger, pursue a similar path, hoping she can help avenge her father’s death. It’s practically a classic Robin origin story, and like Bruce Wayne, Daredevil doesn’t seem to consider the risks of involving someone so young.
