EastEnders reveals Ravi Gulati mental health storyline to reach climax this month – as key charity involvement confirmed

This article includes discussion of suicide that some readers may find distressing.

Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) is to reach a crisis point on EastEnders later this month.

For the past few months, the BBC One soap opera has featured a storyline focusing on a character’s struggles with mental health. Ravi has started hurting himself and has been acting increasingly strangely and unpredictably.

Thiara delivered a standout performance as Ravi grappled with intense guilt over his involvement in a drug operation where he exploited Kojo Asare and Harry Mitchell.

On top of everything else, he’s been struggling with several incredibly difficult situations: he was forced to violently confront his son, Davinder ‘Nugget’ Gulati, after someone secretly drugged him as part of a revenge scheme orchestrated by the Mitchells. He’s also been working undercover for the police, trying to gather information on a dangerous criminal organization, which adds even more stress.

Over the next few weeks, Ravi’s worsening mental health, fueled by his worry about keeping his family safe, will cause him to contemplate suicide.

Ravi’s family – including his partner Priya, stepmother Suki, and his children – will do everything they can to support him and get him the assistance he needs.

EastEnders worked closely with the Samaritans while developing this storyline, ensuring it was portrayed accurately and with sensitivity.

Ben Wadey, Executive Producer of EastEnders, explained that the show carefully researches sensitive storylines like Ravi’s. He expressed gratitude to the Samaritans for their guidance, which helped ensure the story was handled with appropriate care and sensitivity.

Lorna Fraser, who leads the Media Advisory Service at Samaritans, explained that storylines dealing with mental health and suicide, when handled carefully, can help reduce stigma and encourage people who are struggling to reach out and talk about their feelings.

We’re pleased to have worked with EastEnders on Ravi’s storyline, handling his self-harm and mental health struggles with care. We appreciate their commitment to doing this safely, and we hope it encourages viewers who are struggling to reach out for help.
