Why Homelander Desperately Needs V-One in The Boys Season 5

The latest trailers for Season 5 of The Boys show Homelander urgently seeking V-One, or V1, and its significance is becoming clearer. This substance, previously mentioned in the The Boys universe—especially the spin-off Gen V—has been used by several Supes throughout the series. According to Mother’s Milk in the trailer, V1 can counteract Butcher’s virus that kills Supes, but it appears to be important for other reasons as well.

What makes V1 or V-One so important?

V-One is a particularly strong form of Compound V and will be a central plot device in Season 5 of The Boys, according to creator Eric Kripke. Unlike other versions of the substance that gives people superpowers, V-One is the original, successful serum and grants users effectively eternal life.

According to Mother’s Milk, V-One is essentially a legendary immortality drug. It appears to give people the ability to heal themselves. This likely explains how Soldier Boy survived Butcher’s virus – we see him recover even after seemingly dying, as shown when he gets up inside a body bag at the end of episode two. This is especially notable because Rock Hard and Jetstreak, who were also affected by the virus, didn’t survive, and were seen suffering from its effects.

Let’s talk about Homelander and this new substance, V-One. It’s not just a way for him to thwart The Boys; it’s deeply tied to his ego and his increasingly desperate need to be seen as a god. We’ve always known he thinks he’s above us, treating people like playthings, but this season, we’re seeing cracks in that facade – he’s visibly worried about aging, even plucking out gray hairs! V-One seems to be about more than power for him, though; it’s a way to connect with Soldier Boy, finally finding some kind of father figure. And here’s where it gets really interesting: Sister Sage clearly knows about V-One, thanks to her appearance in Gen V. I have a feeling Homelander achieving godhood is all part of her larger, and likely sinister, ‘Phase Two’ plan. It’s a fascinating development, and I’m eager to see where it leads.

V-One is a powerful serum that even members of The Boys would find valuable. For the past two seasons, a major conflict has been the deadly effect of the virus on Starlight and Kimiko. Butcher, particularly in his more ruthless state this season, is prepared to sacrifice them if he believes it will help eliminate all Supes before he succumbs to his illness. V-One would serve as a critical antidote, not only for Starlight and Kimiko, but potentially for any other Supes the team chooses to save.

Soldier Boy wasn’t the only person with superpowers to receive V-One. Frederick Vought created the substance and gave it to others, including Supes like Stormfront, Bombsight, Torpedo, and Private Angel. We’ll see Bombsight in Season 5, and Torpedo and Private Angel will be in the upcoming Vought Rising spin-off. An earlier, less stable version of V-One also appeared in Season 2 of Gen V, showing Vought doctors testing it on themselves. Only Thomas Godolkin survived without being harmed by its dangerous effects, and the students at Godolkin University eventually discovered he was immortal and had been secretly running the school for years. Thankfully, they were able to stop his plans.

Although V-One protects against the virus, it doesn’t make anyone completely indestructible, as demonstrated by the deaths of Stormfront and Godolkin. Soldier Boy’s radiation abilities can cancel out Compound V’s effects in a Supe, potentially reversing their immortality – even if only briefly – and allowing the virus to take hold. Marie Moreau, a young hero with blood-control powers comparable to Homelander’s, might also be able to disable V-One, though she hasn’t tried yet. Alternatively, her powerful healing could either completely fight off the virus or significantly slow its progress.
